Queens Upsets Men's Tennis In Final 2024 Home Match

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team dropped their final home match of the 2024 season in a 7-0 decision to Queens College on Saturday evening at the Miller Tennis Center. Queens, who sits atop the East Coast Conference standings, moves to 8-6 on the year and 4-1 in ECC play, while the Wildcats fall to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in conference matches after dropping their fourth straight match.

The Wildcats honored graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) ahead of the match. Laplante, who has played an integral role on the team in his three seasons at Daemen, ranks sixth in career singles wins (24) and ninth in combined career singles & doubles wins (38). His 11 singles wins last season ranks seventh for most in a single-season. He leads the Wildcats on the year with seven singles victories.

The match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules. The Knights won all three doubles matches and claimed the doubles point. Queens picked up the No. 3 doubles victory (6-1) over the pairing of sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) and the Knights picked up the first point of the match after taking No. 2 doubles (6-3) over freshman Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and graduate student Zachary Laplante. The Daemen No. 1 doubles pairing of junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) and sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) fought hard but ultimately fell, 6-4.

The Knights won all six singles matches tonight. After winning No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, Queens picked up the match victory.
