D'Youville improved to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the ECC, while Daemen dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the league. It marked the first ever overtime game in the two-year history of Daemen women's lacrosse. Daemen head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. D'Youville returns several key players--including four 2023 all-conference selections--from last year's team that went 8-10 overall and 3-3 in ECC play. The Saints qualified for the four-team ECC Tournament and suffered a 19-5 loss to top-seeded Mercy in the semifinals. Daemen got goals from six different players tonight. Sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with three goals, while junior Olivia Wade (Eden, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) went the distance in goal for Daemen and made 11 saves. Sophomore Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) collected a team-high five ground balls for the Wildcats. Sophomore Madison Handley scored three goals for D'Youville, while junior Brinn Stworzydlak made 11 saves. The game remained scoreless until sophomore Sam Newlin gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 8:29 mark of the first quarter. Daemen evened the score at 1-1 after freshman Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Wade with 1:45 left in the first quarter. D'Youville opened the second quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead, but Miranto cut the lead to 4-2 at the 7:55 mark of the second quarter and freshman Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) netted a player-up goal with just 2:45 left before halftime to pull the Wildcats within a goal. The Saints would take a 4-3 lead into halftime. An unassisted goal by Miranto 3:27 into the third quarter tied the game at 4-4, and Daemen took its first lead of the game when sophomore Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored with 8:45 left in the third. The Saints regained the lead following back-to-back goals, but Daemen tied the game at 6-6 following goal by sophomore Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) with 2:22 left in the quarter. The teams headed into the fourth quarter tied at 6-6. Miranto's third goal gave Daemen a 7-6 lead just 1:35 in the fourth quarter, but the Saints got goals from junior Emily Fischer at 8:07 and Bernas at 4:15 to take an 8-7 lead. An unassisted goal by Wade with 2:26 left in regulation would force overtime. Daemen outshot the Saints 4-2 during overtime, but only one of Daemen's four shots was on goal. The game-winner came after Bernas scooped up a loose ball near the Daemen goal and slipped a low shot past Wright from in close. Daemen finished with a 28-26 edge in shots for the game and the Wildcats also posted a 13-12 edge in draw controls. Miranto led Daemen with four draw controls. Daemen closes out the 2024 regular season Sunday (April 28) when it hosts Mercy University in an ECC game.
