WASHINGTON, DC -- The Daemen University men's tennis team resumed East Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 loss at the University of the District of Columbia. UDC won their fourth straight match and improved to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the ECC. Daemen dropped their third match in a row and fell to 5-10 and 0-2 in ECC play on the year.
The match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the Firebirds won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The UDC No. 2 doubles duo of Oskar Karos and Mauricio Corty outlasted Daemen's team of sophomore
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and junior
Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minnesota), 7-5. UDC won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, 6-2, in each match.
The Firebirds were victorious in all six singles matches, but graduate student
Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) took No. 5 singles to a tiebreak. The seasoned Daemen player lost the first set (6-3), but rallied to win set two (7
7-6
4) to send it to a tiebreak where UDC's Juan Hernandez would win it 6-10. The Firebirds secured the win with straight set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Daemen freshman
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) held fast against UDC's Antonio Durall in a tight No. 3 singles match, but the senior Firebird would hang on to beat the Wildcat freshman, 7-5, 6-4 to earn the fifth UDC point of the night. Playing No. 4 singles today, Chitanand played Karos close but was knocked off by the UDC junior (6-3, 6-4) to secure the win for the Firebirds.
