Women's Tennis Fall Slate Announced Schedule Features 13 Dual Matches 8/8/2024 9:07:00 AM AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen University women's tennis coach Richard Greco, Jr. unveiled the team's 2024 fall schedule today. The slate features 13 traditional dual matches. Daemen will open the year with four non-league matches in the span of seven days. Action gets underway Sept. 7 with a match at Houghton University. Daemen will host Allegheny University in its home-opener the following day (Sept. 8), before heading to Nazareth University on Sept. 10. The season-opening stretch of road matches concludes on Sept. 14 when the Wildcats head to Niagara University to take on the Division I Purple Eagles. The Wildcats will play two matches the weekend of Sept. 20. They open East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Sept. 20 when they host the University of the District of Columbia, and then host West Virginia Wesleyan College in a non-league match on Sept. 21. It will mark the first ever meeting between Daemen and WVWC. The Wildcats will take a one week break before traveling to SUNY Fredonia for a non-league match on Sept. 28. Daemen returns to conference play the weekend of Oct. 4, as the Wildcats hit the road to take on Queens College (Oct. 4) and St. Thomas Aquinas College (Oct. 5). STAC defeated Queens to claim the ECC Championship last fall. Daemen's final home match of the fall season is set for Oct. 11 against Molloy University. Daemen defeated the Lions, 5-2, last fall and the Wildcats have prevailed in the last three matches between the schools. The Wildcats close out non-conference play with a trip to Pennsylvania in mid October. Daemen will take on Kutztown University on Oct. 14 and Millersville University on Oct. 15. The regular season finale is set for Oct. 19 when the Wildcats take on cross-town rival D'Youville University in an ECC match. The top four teams in the final ECC standings will advance to the conference tournament, which is slated for October 25-26. Daemen is looking to make its fifth-straight appearance in the ECC Championships. Daemen returns five players from last year's team that finished 6-12 overall and 2-3 in the ECC. Senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) top the list of returning players. Rubio enters her fifth season with the program this fall. The ECC Rookie of the Year and second team All-ECC pick as a freshman in 2021-22, she has played in 67 singles matches over her career and ranks sixth in career singles wins at Daemen with 31. Scime turned in an outstanding third season with the program last year. Playing primarily No. 2 singles throughout the year, she went 15-7 in singles play overall (13-5 in dual matches) and 11-12 in doubles play. It marked the second-straight year she has posted 15 singles wins, which ranks as the second most in a season in program history. Christina Stasiuk posted a program-record 18 wins during the 2017-18 season. Scime posted a six-match winning streak midway through the season and is 33-14 in her last 47 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season. She has earned All-ECC honors the past two seasons and this year became the first player in program history to earn first team all-conference honors. The team MVP the past two seasons, Scime has moved into the top five in both combined singles and doubles wins (65) and career singles victories (38) among Daemen's all-time leaders. The program leader in career singles winning percentage (.633), she will enter her senior season 12 wins shy of breaking Stasiuk's program record for career singles wins (49). Greco also announced that the Daemen men's tennis team will play six dual matches during the team's abbreviated 2024 fall schedule. Daemen University features the premier NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
