INDIANA, PA. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team won both of its first two matches at the Crimson Hawk Classic hosted by the University of Indiana Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon to move to 6-3 on the year. The Wildcats took down the unbeaten Shepherd Rams, 3-2 (17-25, 25-27, 25-13, 15-13) in their first match of the tournament after four Daemen players tallied double-digit kills in the exciting five-set victory. Daemen then went on to top Elizabeth City State University 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19) to go 2-0 on the day. The Wildcats hit .193 in the match, totaling 56 kills off 150 attacks with 27 errors while holding ECSU to just 28 kills in the match for a .040 hitting percentage.
Match #1: Daemen vs. Shepherd
After dropping the first two sets of the match, Daemen kicked off the third set up 15-5 and cruised to a 25-17 victory after
Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) totaled five of Daemen's 15 third-set kills. The Wildcats fed off the set victory and opened the fourth on a 10-1 run and went on to win six of the final seven points in the set to take the fourth 25-13 and force a fifth. The Rams began the final set with a 2-1 lead, but the Wildcats then scored five unanswered points to take a 7-2 advantage. Shepherd went on a 3-0 run late to make it a one-point game, 11-10. The Wildcats held on through three match points, winning four of the final seven points, to win the fifth, 15-13, and take the match 3-2. Daemen totaled 67 kills and hit at a .225 in the match while holding the Rams to just 40 kills for a .202 hitting percentage.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Graduate student Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted a team-tying high 16 kills with just three errors on 27 attacks for a .481 hitting percentage, while adding three digs and two block assists in the win.
- Armstrong posted a team-high .520 hitting percentage while hitting 16 kills on 25 attacks. The senior middle had just three errors and added a dig on the day.
- Junior outside Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) totaled 14 kills on 26 attacks to hit .385 on the day, adding team-highs 18 digs and six aces for her second double-double of the season.
- Graduate student Abby Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) totaled 13 kills and added nine digs, three aces and one assist.
- Sophomore setter Molly Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) set the Wildcats to victory with a career-high 45 assists (9 assists/set) and posted her second career double-double, adding 17 digs, five aces and four kills in the win.
- After being named the East Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, graduate student libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 13 digs, 11 assists and two aces against the Rams today.
Match #2: Daemen vs. Elizabeth City State
The Wildcats dominated the first set, out-hitting ECSU 15 to 7 for a 25-16 first set victory. The Vikings returned the fire in the second, however, winning six of the final eight points after being tied up at 19 to take the second, 25-21, and tie it up at one a piece. ECSU opened the third up 6-2, but the Wildcats went on a 12-4 run off of six Daemen kills to take a 20-16 lead. Daemen finished the set off scoring four unanswered points to win the third, 25-18. Giraud totaled six of Daemen's 13 kills in the set. The Wildcats and Vikings traded points all throughout the fourth, but Daemen went on a 7-1 run to end the set, winning the fourth 25-19 to take the match.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Malpica led the Wildcats offensively in the second game of the day, totaling 17 kills with five errors on 47 attacks for a .255 hitting percentage while posting her second straight – and third this season – double-double with 17 digs in the win. She added two blocks for a team-high 18 points.
- Giraud put together another impressive performance with 16 kills, five digs and added one block to her stat line.
- Armstrong totaled six kills in the fourth set to finish with 11 total with just three errors on 20 attacks to hit at a team-high .400 clip. The senior led the Wildcats with six blocks, posting a team-high three solo blocks and three block assists.
- Senior setter Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) set the Wildcats to victory with 45 assists (11.25 assists/set) and added seven kills on nine attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. Dole led the Wildcats at the line with three aces and added seven digs, two solo blocks and one block assist for 12.5 points.
- Brundage continued her defensive prowess today, totaling 28 digs (7 digs/set) against the Vikings while tallying two aces, two assists and a kill in the win.
