SPARKILL, N.Y. – Daemen University and St. Thomas Aquinas College played to a scoreless draw in East Coast Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Wildcats overall record moved to 3-2-2 and 0-1-1 in ECC play while the Spartans, who entered the game ranked eighth in the latest
United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll , see their record go to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference action.
HIGHLIGHTS
• The Spartans nearly scored just over two minutes into the game when Francisco Degiorgi fired a shot on goal, but senior goalkeeper
Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) stopped the shot to keep the sides scoreless.
• Each side registered three more shots on goal before the halftime whistle with neither team finding the back of the net.
• Daemen tallied two shots on goal in the second half to try and break the deadlock, but both were saved.
• St. Thomas Aquinas held a 21-11 edge on shots, but the two sides tied in shots on goal with five each.
• Bustamante and Johan Morales each made five saves for their respective sides. Both Bustamante and Morales each played the entire contest.
GAME NOTES
• Today's result marked the first draw in the all-time series between the two ECC foes. St. Thomas Aquinas still leads the series overall, 7-3-1.
• Six total cards were issued in the match with five yellow cards and one red card which was awarded to Daemen.
• Daemen played to a 0-0 tie for the second time this season and first instance since Sept. 15 against Saint Michael's. Previously, the Wildcats had not played in a scoreless draw since the 2008 campaign.
• Bustamante entered the game ranked 18
th in the nation and second in the ECC for total saves with 28.
• Along with Bustamante, defenders
Calvin Kron (Greece, N.Y.) and
Jean Tilo (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) played the full 90 minutes.
