HIGHLIGHTS: • Malone was able to get on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute due to a Daemen own goal. • Daemen had their first of three scoring chances nearly seven minutes later when Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) fired a shot that was corralled by Malone's Gavyn Ernst in the 22nd minute. • Each side had two more chances that were saved before the halftime whistle, sending Malone into the break with their 1-0 lead intact. • After a scoreless 15 minutes to begin the second stanza, the Pioneers doubled their lead off a header from Dylan DiPerro that found the back of the net in the 61st minute. • Malone kept the Wildcats at bay the remainder of the contest to secure the season-opening 2-0 win. • Ernst made three saves for the clean sheet victory while senior Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) stopped the ball five times for the Wildcats. • There were seven yellow cards, all coming in the second half. Five of the cards were awarded to Malone and two to Daemen. • Malone out-shot Daemen 13-8, with a 10-3 edge in the second half. The Pioneers also led the game in shots on target, 6-3. The Wildcats, however, edged the Pioneers in corner kicks, 5-3. GAME NOTES: • Today's contest marked the 17th all-time meeting between the two former NAIA rivals. Malone also snapped Daemens' three-game winning streak in the series.
