Men's Soccer Downs Walsh for Their First Win of the Season

AMHERST, N.Y. – Amidst rainy conditions throughout the contest, the Daemen University men's soccer team scored twice in the first half to defeat Walsh University, 2-1, for their first win of the year.

The Wildcats see their record improve to 1-1 while the Cavs drop to 0-2 on the young season.

HIGHLIGHTS
•  The Wildcats got on the board first in the fifth minute as graduate student Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) received a pass off of a Jean Tilo ( Port-au-Prince, Haiti) free kick and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to put Daemen on the board.
•  Daemen continued to pressure the Walsh defense and in the 17th minute, senior Emmanuel Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) nabbed a loose ball in the box off a failed clear from the Cavs defense and found the back of the goal to double the Wildcats lead before halftime.
• Walsh cut the Daemen lead in half less than two minutes into the second half as Bobby Moore converted a free kick opportunity.
• The Cavs continued to pepper the Wildcats with shots throughout the second half, but senior goalkeeper Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) stopped all four shots he faced the remainder of the contest to secure the 2-1 win for the Wildcats.
• Walsh outshot Daemen by a 25-4 margin and held a 10-1 edge on corners.
• Bustamante made a career-high 10 saves for the win while Walsh's Javier Sanchez let in both shots he faced.

GAME NOTES:
• Today's contest marked the 20th all-time meeting between the two former NAIA rivals and gives the Wildcats their first win in the series since Sept. 9, 2017. The last five games between the two schools have either ended in a tie or have been decided by one goal.
• Tilo's assist in the 5th minute represents his first in a Daemen Uniform.
• Perez's goal in the 17th minute was the first of his collegiate career.
• Bustamante's 10 saves eclipse his previous career-high of eight which he set last year against Gannon on Sept. 13, 2023.
• The game was paused for over a half hour in the 83rd minute due to thunder and lightning in the area.
