LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Gabby Gunnip scored five times to help lead Lock Haven University to a 17-7 victory over the Daemen University women's lacrosse team in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field. Today marked the first game of the season for both teams as well.
Along with Gunnip, Hadley Munn and Makayla Kelly each notched a hat trick of their own to help pace the Bald Eagles offense. Munn and Gunnip each tallied six points with Munn notching a game-high three assists as well. On the defensive side of the ball, Mackenna Brown and Kaitlyn Collins each grabbed four ground balls while Nadia Baskot won five draw controls. In net, Gretchen King was credited with the win and made five saves.
Junior attacker
Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Caden Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) each tallied a team-high two goals while fellow sophomore attacker
Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) and junior attacker
Grace Heath (Corning, N.Y.) notched two assists each. On defense, junior defender
Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) collected four ground balls while in the draw control circle, senior midfielder
Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, N.Y.) won five draw controls in her Daemen debut. In her collegiate debut, freshman goalie
Molly Evans (Fulton, N.Y.) made seven saves.
The host Bald Eagles stormed out of the gate, notching the first five goals of the afternoon before Deveans tallied the Wildcats first goal of the season at the 2:28 during the player up situation. Lock Haven responded with a four goal run that spanned from the end of the first to midway through the second period to hold a 9-1 lead with 10:53 left. The 'Cats were able to gain some momentum before the half ended as they scored two of the final three goals of the frame, courtesy of Castner and
Mikayla Myer, to enter halftime down, 10-3.
Out of the halftime break, Lock Haven used multiple long scoring runs throughout the third and fourth quarters to keep Daemen at bay and commanded a 17-4 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Wildcats were able to end the day on a high note as they tallied the final three goals of the game, with Baran scoring back-to-back goals and Castner notching her second of the day, to close the contest.
Despite the loss, Daemen ended the game with a 15-12 edge in draw controls. Lock Haven outshot the Blue and White, 32-17, and tallied 23 ground balls compared to 14 for Daemen.
GAME NOTES
• Today marked the second all-time meeting between Lock Haven and Daemen. The Bald Eagles have won both meetings.
• Along with Deveans and Evans, Heath,
Adison Pollutro (West Seneca, N.Y.),
Maria Salvo (Clarence, N.Y.) and
Cameron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y.) all made their Daemen debuts. For Pollutro, it marked her collegiate debut as well.
• This preseason, Daemen was tabbed fifth in the 2025 East Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll following a vote of the leagues seven coaches.
• Myer scored two goals in a game for the first time since April 14, 2024 against UDC.
