BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sidney Klinger scored with 1:28 left to break and 11-11 deadlock to help Walsh escape with a 12-11 victory over the Daemen University women's lacrosse team in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action on a cold and windy Thursday night at Coyer Field.
With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 2-4 while the Wildcats dropped to 1-2.
Senior
Cameron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y.) paced Daemen with four goals, four ground balls, four caused turnovers and six draw controls. Fellow midfielder, junior
Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.), tallied three goals and snagged five draw controls of her own. Sophomore
Maria Salvo (Clarence, N.Y.) picked up her first goals in a Daemen uniform with a pair of tallies in the losing effort. In net, freshman
Molly Evans (Fulton, N.Y.) made eight saves to match her season-high along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jossalyn Welch and Katie Coomes each tabbed a hat trick for Walsh while Grace Santee led the defense with four ground balls and five caused turnovers. In net, Alison O'Hanian made four saves for the win.
Tied 5-5 midway through the second quarter after exchanging goals throughout most of the contest, the Wildcats offense found their spark as a goal from Salvo on the man-up situation put Daemen ahead 6-5. The 'Cats did not slow down as senior
Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, N.Y.) gave Daemen a 7-5 cushion minutes later. The host Wildcats never relinquished their lead and entered the lock room ahead, 7-5.
Walsh struck first to begin the second half as a goal from Coomes cut the Daemen lead to just one, 7-6. However, the Blue and White replied with a goal from Briggs to push their advantage back to two, 8-6. The Cavaliers found another response as a Price goal set off a 3-0 run for the visitors that saw them take just their second lead of the game, 9-8, with 3:03 left in the third.
Daemen was able to stop the Cavs run a goal from sophomore
Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored with one second left in the third frame to tie the game, 9-9. The Wildcats did not slow down to begin the final frame as Briggs scored just 38 seconds into the fourth to put Daemen back ahead, 10-9. The 'Cats were unable to hold their lead as Walsh netted back-to-back goals courtesty of Welch and Rachel Black to reclaim the lead, 11-10, with 8:08 remaining. Briggs was able to tie the game for the 'Cats late in the frame as she netted her fourth of the day with 3:31 remaining to make it 11-11. Walsh was able to find one final goal as Sidney Klinger slotted the ball into the back of the net for the game winning goal with 1:28 left to put the 'Cavs ahead, 12-11.
Daemen won the ensuing draw control to regain possession and attempted and tie the game, but Walsh forced a turnover and was able to run the clock out and escape with a 12-11 victory.
Walsh held a 30-22 edge in shots and 17-8 edge in ground balls. Daemen, however, led the game in draw controls,19-7, and went two-for-three on free-position shots while Walsh only went one-of-five
GAME NOTES
• Today marked the third all-time meeting between Daemen and Walsh. Walsh has won all three prior meetings.
• With her three goals, Bouley moved into sole possession of first place all-time in program history for points with 84 points.
• Briggs six draw control wins are the most by a Daemen player this season through three games.
• Bouley nabbed her first hat trick of the season and first since April 14, 2024, against the University of the District of Columbia with her goals tonight.
• Briggs four caused turnovers are tied with Bouley and current graduate assistant
Aaliyah Deaton for the third most all-time in a single game.
