Women's Lacrosse Earns First Shutout in Program History with 21-0 Victory over UDC

13 different Wildcats register at least one goal

WASHINGTON D.C. – A season-high 13 different players for the back of the net for the Daemen University women's lacrosse team as they earned their first shutout victory in program history with a 21-0 thrashing of the University of the District of Columbia in East Coast Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday morning at UDC Field.
 
With their second win in three outings, the Wildcats improved to 4-6 and 2-1 in ECC play while the Firebirds remained winless at 0-6 and 0-2 in conference action.
 
Senior midfielder Cameron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y.) led Daemen with five total points on three goals and two assists. The Buffalo, N.Y., native also helped Daemen on the defensive side of the ball as she collected a team-best four ground balls to pair with six draw controls and two caused turnovers. Fellow senior Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, N.Y.) and sophomore Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) each notched a hat trick of their own in the winning effort. Junior midfielder Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) tallied a season-high three assists while on defense, junior defender Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) snagged three ground balls and scored her second career goal as well. Freshman utility player Marianna Szamoskozi (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) performed on both sides of the ball in the win as she made one save in net during the first 30 minutes of action. Playing in the field for the second half, the freshman registered two points with a goal and an assist. Fellow freshman Molly Evans (Fulton, N.Y) made two saves of her own in her return to action as well.
 
Aliyah Bailey grabbed three ground balls for UDC while in net, Natalia Perkins made 15 saves in the loss.
 
The Wildcats jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest, paced by a pair of goals from sophomore attacker Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.). Daemen added on four more goals before the opening stanza ended to start the running clock and command a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes of action.
 
Daemen dominated the second quarter as they only allowed one shot from UDC, which was saved by Szamoskozi, while scoring six goals of their own to head to the locker room with a 16-0 advantage. All six goals in the second quarter came off the stick of six different players as well.
 
Out of halftime, the 'Cats did not slow down as Szamoskozi scored her first goal of the afternoon after moving out of the cage and onto the field before junior attacker Sylvie Dickerman (Corning, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season to extend the Wildcats lead to 18-0. Daemen tallied three more goals before the final whistle with Havert, Dickerman and junior attacker Grace Heath (Corning, N.Y.) all finding the back of the net.
 
The game was called after three quarters at the request of the UDC coach.

Daemen ended the contest with a 42-4 advantage in shots and 24-11 edge in ground balls. The 'Cats also held a 15-8 edge in draw controls as well.
 
GAME NOTES
• Daemen is now 3-0 all-time against UDC
• The 13 different goal scorers for Daemen are the most in a game for the Wildcats this season.
• Szamoskozi is the only player in the NCAA this season to make at least one save and record at least one goal in multiple games.
• Briggs earned her fourth hat trick this season. For Deveans, it was her second three goal game this year.
• Myer recorded the first hat trick of her collegiate career.
• Daemen is the first team from the ECC this season to earn a shutout victory.
• The Wildcats 21 goal margin of victory tied the program record which was set on March 22 at St. Thomas Aquinas in their 24-3 win.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to action on April 9 when they take on nationally ranked Seton Hill on the road. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
