AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team picked up their first win of the season in a 5-2 victory over NCAA Division III foe Nazareth University on Sunday morning. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 1-1 on the year.
Daemen picked up the first point of the match by winning two of the three doubles match ups. Senior
Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior
Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) picked up their first doubles win of the season in a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and freshman
Mitch Pollack (Winnipeg, Man.) continued with the Wildcat winning by sweeping second doubles, 6-0. Nazareth won No. 3 doubles, 6-3.
The Wildcats built off their doubles momentum by taking four of the six singles matches on the day. Lumanog defeated Max Funiciello (6-2, 6-4) at top singles, followed by Garcia getting a big 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Noah Britton and Mergens collecting win at third singles (6-1, 6-1) over Nathan Bigalow. Sophomore
Vondin Henderson (Tonawanda, N.Y.) earned a win at No. 6 singles, topping Timmy Taylor 6-4, 6-3. All four Wildcats earned their first singles wins of the season.
