Miranto Scores Twice to Lead Women's Soccer Past AIC

AMHERST, N.Y. — Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored twice, including the game-winner, to help the Daemen University women's soccer team defeat American International College 3-2 at Royal Park Sunday.

Miranto netted the game-winner in the 79th minute after intercepting a pass from the goalie and dribbling in to fire a shot that went bar-down, putting the Wildcats ahead 3-2.

Lily Macfarlane (Murcott, England) had tied the contest at 2-2 in the 55th minute. Miranto fought for a loose ball in the box and tapped it to Macfarlane, who placed a shot into the right side netting.

In the first half, Daemen and AIC exchanged early goals, setting a competitive tone. The Yellow Jackets struck first in the third minute when Liz Braz received a pass from Lily Shields and fired a shot from the top of the box that slipped past the goalie.

Daemen responded in the 22nd minute when Ava Thompson (East Amherst, N.Y.) played a ball into the box that Miranto volleyed off the bounce past the keeper, with assists from Macfarlane and Thompson, leveling the score at 1-1.

Jocelyn Wilson put AIC back in front 2-1 with a goal in the 39th minute off passes from Julianna Magalhaes and Caroline Skov.

Daemen had two other shots on goal in the first half, including another one by Miranto and one by Kaitlin Mettler (Royalton, N.Y.) that got saved, as the Wildcats trailed 2-1 at halftime.

Thompson and Macfarlane also had chances to equalize in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, ripping shots that got stopped by the keeper.

Goalkeeper Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) made some crucial saves to help Daemen's defense hold firm against a barrage of shots from the Yellow Jackets, preserving the narrow lead through the final whistle. Schultz recorded five saves over 90 minutes to secure her first win of the season.

Miranto logged the 10th multi-goal game of her career and her 14th contest with three-plus points. She also tallied her 11th career game-winning goal. Macfarlane contributed a goal and an assist, marking her first career three-plus point game along with her first career goal. Thompson also earned the first point of her career with an assist.

The Wildcats return to Royal Park next Friday, hosting St. Michael's for a 3 p.m. contest.
