Wildcats Win Four Events, Post 16 Top-Five Finishes at Highlander Invitational

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Daemen women's track and field team put on a dominating performance at the Highlander Classic on Saturday. 

The Wildcats logged 16 top-five finishes, winning four events and earning six silver medals and three bronze medals. 

Leading the way in running events was Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.), who finished first in the 60m hurdles, and Patsy Oberholzer (Greece, N.Y.), who won the 3000m. In the throwing pit, Kristen Oliver (Massena, N.Y.) placed first in the weight throw, and Julia Petry (Batavia, N.Y.) earned gold in the shot put.

 HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Schultz logged a first-place time of 9.77 seconds in the preliminaries, then improved to 9.73 seconds in the finals to earn the gold medal. This is the second straight meet that she has logged a top-three finish in the event.  Skylar Savage placed second in the prelims with a time of 9.85 seconds, then finished fourth in the finals, posting a time of 10.18 seconds. 
  • Lia Brasacchio (Victor, N.Y.) came in third in the 400m, crossing the finish line in 1:04.25. 
  • In the 600m run, Raegan Giardini (West Clarksville, N.Y.)  placed second, finishing in 1:55.02. 
  • Mia Wright (Liverpool, N.Y.) placed third in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 8.20 seconds, then bested that with a mark of 8.10 seconds, earning a silver medal.  Schultz took sixth in the preliminaries (8.41 seconds), then logged an eighth-place result in the finals (8.61 seconds).
  • In the 800m, Madeline Straub (Olean, N.Y.) logged a third-place finish with a personal-best time of 2:31.04. 
  • The Wildcats recorded two top-three finishes in the 200m dash, with Wright taking 2nd place with a time of 26.82 seconds and Savage placing third at 27.66 seconds. Savage's time marked a personal best. 
  • Oberholzer recorded a personal-best time of 10:47.77 in the 3000m, earning her first gold medal of the season. Kylie Piekarski (Lancaster, N.Y.) came in fourth, posting a time of 11:33.51. 
  • Daemen's throwers put on a strong showing, with Oliver placing first in the weight throw with a toss of 15.36m. Petry finished one spot behind her with a personal-best toss of 13.58m. 
  • Petry continued her dominance with a gold medal in the shot put, with a launch of 11.47m, also a PR. Carli Quinlan (Rochester, N.Y.) placed eighth with a toss of 9.65m, while Elizabeth Bentley (Belmont, N.Y.) finished one spot behind her with a throw of 9.54m. 
  • Savage took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.10m while Schultz took fourth with a jump of 4.81m. 
  • D'Naesha Quicksey (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned a silver medal in the triple jump with a leap of 9.99m.

The Wildcats are back in action next weekend, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio, for the YSU Mid Major Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
