FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Daemen University men's volleyball team fell to Sacred Heart University in a five-set heart breaker, 2-3 (25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 25-20, 7-15) on Saturday evening at the William H. Pitt Center. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-7 overall while the Pioneers improve to 6-3 on the season. Three Wildcats finished with double-digit kills as Daemen recorded 54 kills and 52 assists and out-blocked SHU 10 to 5 on the night.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Redshirt sophomore Patrick Mullen (Farmingdale, N.J.) led the Wildcats with 17 kills on the night on 40 attacks and finished with nine digs, four aces, three block assists and two assists while leading the team with 22.5 points.
- Redshirt senior Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) finished with 16 kills while hitting at a .345 clip on the night, adding three aces, one block assist and four digs to his 19.5 point night.
- Sophomore Aidan White (Fairport, N.Y.) hit 12 kills on 34 attacks and added seven digs, one block assist, one dig and one assist.
- Redshirt sophomore Peter Leicht (Brockport, N.Y.) totaled eight kills for a team-high .462 hitting percentage and added five block assists.
- Junior setter Jariel Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted 44 assists with four block assists and three digs.
- Senior libero Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) finished with 13 digs and three assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Daemen capitalized early with back-to-back service aces from Peter Leicht, establishing a 4-2 lead. The Wildcats surged to an 11-8 advantage, fueled by two kills from Wieberg. Aidan White and Leicht combined for late kills, pushing Daemen to close the set 25-22.
- Sacred Heart took a 9-5 lead early, but the Wildcats narrowed the gap to 14-12, fueled by a service ace from Mullen. Daemen surged ahead 23-20 with two consecutive kills from Mullen, but the Pioneers capitalized on Daemen's late attack errors and took the second, 26-24, to tie the match up at 1-1.
- In the third, Daemen jumped out to a 6-2 lead with a Mullen ace and a block by Maverick O'Neil (East Amherst, N.Y.) and White. The Pioneers clawed back to tie the score at 11-11, and despite back-and-forth play from the Pioneers and Wildcats, SHU sealed the set with a 25-21 victory.
- The Wildcats and Pioneers traded points to open the fourth, but Daemen began to pull away at 16-13 after consecutive blocks from Leicht and Mullen. A kill from Mullen and an ace from Wieberg sealed the set for Daemen, 25-20.
- Despite Sacred Heart taking a 4-1 lead early in the fifth, the Wildcats closed the gap, 5-3, after kills from Wieberg and White. From there, the Pioneers controlled the rest of the fifth, winning 10 of the final 14 points to win the fifth, 15-7 and take the match, 3-2.
