Wildcats Erase Early Deficit But Drop 14-11 Decision to Ravens

KEENE, N.H. — Daemen (5-2) erased an early four-goal deficit but fell to Franklin Pierce (3-3) with a final score of 14-11 on Saturday at Owl Athletic Complex. 

After falling behind 5-1 in the first, Daemen pulled within one (5-4) at halftime. The Wildcats staged a strong third quarter, scoring four goals, but Franklin Pierce responded with a decisive seven-goal fourth quarter to secure the win. Both teams demonstrated offensive proficiency, with the Wildcats converting three woman-up goals while Franklin Pierce added one to its tally.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Sadie Schlesselman (Hamburg, N.Y.) contributed significantly with seven points, logging four goals and three assists, leading the offensive effort. 
  • Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists,
  • Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) scored two goals and provided one assist, with a notable free-position goal.
  • Maria Salvo (Clarence, N.Y.) rounded out the offensive performers with two goals and two assists, further boosting the team's scoring output.
  • Defensively, Myer logged two caused turnovers and scooped up a team-leading four ground balls. 
  • Schlesselman and Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) also caused two turnovers. 
  • Goalie Mia Caryl (Marcellus, N.Y.) made six saves. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Franklin Pierce pulled ahead 2-0 at the start of the game. Myer then capitalized on a free position attempt at 10:54 to put the Wildcats on the board. FPU responded strongly, with Julianna Lanzillo and Maura Cogavin quickly scoring, aided by Kelci Waters. Despite the Wildcats' efforts in maintaining possession, the Ravens extended their lead, closing the quarter with a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Wildcats took control early in the second quarter with Myer scoring just 18 seconds in, assisted by Schlesselman. Castner extended the momentum with a successful free position shot at the 10:37 mark. Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) was pivotal in maintaining possession with multiple draw controls. Adison Pollutro (West Seneca, N.Y.)  capitalized on a woman-up opportunity, scoring with 7:53 remaining, assisted by Salvo. The quarter concluded with Daemen narrowing the gap to 5-4, scoring three unanswered goals.
  • In the third, Salvo capitalized on a woman-up opportunity with a goal assisted by Schlesselman at 11:37, leveling the score. Castner then extended the lead with another woman-up goal, again assisted by Schlesselman, at 10:54. Schlesselman further strengthened the Wildcats' position by scoring at 6:40, assisted by Castner, and again at 5:06 with an assist from Salvo. Despite a late goal by Franklin Pierce's Cogavin at 2:14, Daemen maintained its edge. The quarter concluded with the Wildcats leading 8-7.
  • Schlesselman narrowed the gap to start the fourth with back-to-back goals at 13:32 and 12:49, putting Daemen ahead 10-9. Despite a strong performance by Myer, who contributed with assists and ground ball pickups, Franklin Pierce responded with five straight goals, extending its lead. Salvo added a late goal for the Wildcats at 2:31, assisted by Myer, aiming to keep the team's hopes alive. Ultimately, Franklin Pierce maintained its advantage, concluding the game with a 14-11 victory.
GAME NOTES 
  • Schlesselman logged career-bests in goals (4), assists (3), and points (7)
  • Myer's four points tied her career best. The junior also picked up a season-high four ground balls and tied her career best with five draw controls.
  • Salvo posted four-plus points for the third straight game. 
  • Daemen fired 34 shots, putting 20 on goal. 
  • The Wildcats went 16-for-17 on clears.
  • Daemen won 16 draw controls, led by Myer's five.
  • The Wildcats and Ravens were meeting for the first time in the programs' history.
