Wildcats Fall To Redhawks In Key ECC Battle

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Daemen University women's lacrosse team fell to Roberts Wesleyan University with a final score of 13–9 in a key East Coast Conference matchup Saturday at Redhawks Field. Despite the loss, Daemen maintained its position as a top-four team in the ECC standings as the regular season nears completion. 

With the loss, Daemen drops ot 8-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Redhawks established a firm grip on second place in the standings, improving to 4-1 in the league (5-8 overall). 

The game opened with the Wildcats' Mia Caryl making crucial saves against two early free position shots by Lia MacDougall of Roberts Wesleyan. Daemen took the lead at 11:23 with Ella Bouley scoring the first goal of the quarter. Adison Pollutro extended the lead to 2–0 at 11:11, assisted by Avery Castner, prompting a timeout by Roberts Wesleyan. Roberts Wesleyan responded with a goal by Kadie Tierney at 9:56, narrowing the gap. However, Daemen's Castner scored a free position goal at 6:36, securing a 3–1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Castner opened the second quarter with a goal for the Wildcats, assisted by Pollutro, at the 14:47 mark. Roberts Wesleyan responded strongly, with Tierney scoring twice, both assisted by Ella Dossier, leveling the score and then taking the lead. Alison Dioguardi added to Roberts Wesleyan's advantage with two goals, one during a player-up situation. Hannah Sparks concluded the quarter's scoring for Roberts Wesleyan, also capitalizing on a player-up opportunity. The quarter ended with Roberts Wesleyan leading 6–4, having outscored Daemen 5–1 in the second quarter.

Roberts Wesleyan maintained control in the third quarter, capitalizing early with MacDougall scoring a player-up goal at 14:21, assisted by Dossier. Daemen responded with Castner finding the net at 12:32, assisted by Camryn Day, narrowing the score. Roberts Wesleyan's Tierney regained their lead with a goal at 11:44, assisted by Erica Savage, before Maria Salvo closed the gap again for the Wildcats with a goal at 11:04, assisted by Castner. However, Sparks extended Roberts Wesleyan's lead to 9–6 with a player-up goal at 4:55, assisted by Dioguardi, as the quarter concluded.

In a tightly contested fourth quarter, Roberts Wesleyan extended its lead with a free position goal by MacDougall at 11:49, followed by a player-up goal from MacDougall again, assisted by Tierney, at 8:53. Daemen responded with a goal from Bouley at 8:42 and another from Pollutro, assisted by Day, at 6:38 to close the gap. Roberts Wesleyan's Sparks scored twice, with her second goal at 0:53 assisted by Dossier, to maintain the lead. Daemen's Castner found the net with just four seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough to overcome Roberts Wesleyan's advantage. The quarter ended with Roberts Wesleyan ahead 13–9.

Avery Castner led the scoring effort with four goals and added two assists, contributing significantly to the Wildcats' offensive production. Ella Bouley scored twice, converting all three of her shots on goal, and both tallies came unassisted. Pollutro also found the net twice and assisted on another goal, making an impact on the scoreboard. Maria Salvo registered a goal on nine shot attempts, showcasing her persistence in the attack.

Kadie Tierney led the offensive efforts for Roberts Wesleyan with four goals and one assist. Hannah Sparks also contributed significantly by scoring four goals on four shots, demonstrating efficiency with each attempt. Lia MacDougall added to the scoring tally with three goals, two of which were player-up goals, along with a goal from a free position shot. Dioguardi showcased her playmaking ability, registering two goals and two assists. Dossier was a key facilitator, leading the team with six assists, enhancing the team's overall performance.

Daemen will closeout the regular season at home next Saturday, April 25 when they welcome the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans to Royal Park for 12 p.m. first draw.
