HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Daemen University men's volleyball team fell to FDU in a tightly contested NEC match, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26) on the road on Friday night. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 12-11 and 5-4 in NEC play.
The heavy-hitting Daemen duo of redshirt sophomore
Patrick Mullen (Farmingdale, N.J.) and redshirt senior
Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) combined for 30 of Daemen's 46 total kills, with Mullen
totaled a season-high 20 kills and Wieberg adding 10 kills.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Mullen totaled 20 kills with just five errors on 43 attacks to hit at a .349 clip, adding five digs, four block assists and two aces.
- Wieberg finished with 10 kills, five digs, three block assists, two aces and one solo block.
- Fifth year Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) totaled seven kills on 10 attacks with just one error for a .600 clip, finishing with five total blocks -- six block assists and two solo blocks -- one ace, one dig and one assist.
- Junior setter Jariel Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted 39 assists, eight digs, one ace, and one solo block.
- Senior libero Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) finished with 11 digs and two assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- It was a competitive first set, with the Wildcats quickly taking a 6-2 lead off of kills from Mullen, O'Neill and Wieberg. Despite several service errors, the Wildcats maintained a slight edge, with Wieberg contributing significantly through timely kills. However, FDU capitalized on the Wildcats' mistakes, and after the set was tied up at 19, four Daemen errors contributed to the Knights taking the first set 25-22.
- Mullen's offensive performance was key for the Wildcats as they secured a 25-20 set win over FDU. Mullen contributed five kills during the set, including pivotal points assisted by Giraud and Zelasko. The Wildcats took advantage of several FDU errors, including service and attack errors that bolstered their lead. The Wildcats maintained control throughout the second, concluding the set with a final kill by Mullen to finish with a 25-20 victory.
- The set saw Daemen's O'Neill and Mullen each contributing multiple kills, with Mullen recording his final kill to tie the score at 22-22. Despite a strong effort from the Wildcats, FDU's Dylan McFadden secured a critical point with a kill, and the set concluded with an attack error by Mullen giving FDU the win, 25-23. margin.
- The closely contested fourth set saw multiple shifts in momentum. Daemen pulled even at 7-7 after a series of kills by O'Neill. FDU's Laydon Biro consistently pressured the Wildcats' defense, contributing several key points for FDU, including the decisive kill at 24-24 that set up match point. Daemen's efforts, highlighted by Mullen's service aces and offensive contributions, ultimately fell short as FDU secured the win for the Knights, 26-24.
