Hernandez Scores in Battle Against Mercy

AMHERST, N.Y. — Jordan Hernandez (Stockton, Calif.) scored in the first half for the Wildcats, but Daemen fell 2-1 on Saturday at Royal Park in East Coast Conference play. 

Daemen withstood eight Mercy attacking actions early in the second half without conceding, maintaining a 1-0 score from 45:49 to 57:22, before Mercy scored twice. The Wildcats generated seven of their eight shots in the first half and finished with five shots on goal, while Mercy held a 19-8 advantage in shots.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hernandez put the Wildcats ahead in the 11th minute, finishing off a Nolan Smith (Ridgeway, Ontario) assist for the opening goal.
  • Mercy tied it up, 1-1, in the 72nd minute, then took the lead in the 86th minute. 
  • Earlier, the Wildcats created the first sustained pressure of the half with four shots and a corner kick in the opening eight minutes, including two Sincere Noble (Baltimore, Md.) shots saved.
  • Mercy pushed back after the goal, but the Wildcats maintained their advantage while also generating another look through Karim Salome (Logan, Utah). 
  • Tim Florek (Marburg, Germany) had a close attempt when his shot hit the post in the 27th minute. 
  • The Wildcats also had three corners in the first half. 
  • Cristopher Vasquez (Sunnyside, N.Y.) handled Mercy's two shots on frame in the 37th and 38th minutes, and the Wildcats carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • At the start of the second half, the Wildcats protected that one-goal edge through sustained pressure, facing four Mercy corner kicks.
  • Smith ripped a shot high in the 60th minute for Daemen.
  • Players from both teams received red cards in the 74th minute, with Daemen's Vasquez and Mercy's Mario De Roque Zazon being sent off. 
GAME NOTES
  • Hernandez scored his first goal as a Wildcat.
  • Smith logged his second assist of the season.
  • Vasquez made three saves in 74:45. Colin Hockridge (Scarborough, Ontario) made one save in the final 15:15. 
  • The Wildcats fired eight shots, putting five on target.
  • Daemen had three corner kicks.
