Strong Performance From Regan Lifts Daemen Past UMPI

Senior Forward Totals 31 Points and 11 Rebounds

Daemen (19-5) 38-55—93
Maine-Presque Isle (7-9) 23-47—70

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Senior forward Jim Regan (Williamsville, N.Y./Nichols) turned in a dominating performance with a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 93-70 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle here tonight.

Daemen, which is ranked fourth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I poll for the seventh-straight week, improved 19-5 on the year. UMPI, which is receiving votes in the USCAA poll, dropped to 7-9.

Regan, who connected on 11-of-21 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws, recorded his second-straight double-double. He becomes the second Daemen player to score over 30 points in a game this season, joining junior Casey Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) who poured in 35 points in a win over Redeemer College on Dec. 29.

Sheehan helped the Daemen cause tonight with 15, while sophomore Jordan Greene (Fort Edward, N.Y./South Glens Falls) totaled 10 points. Junior Kadeem Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) returned to action after missing six games and totaled nine points in 17 minutes off the bench.

Regan's performance helped to minimize the absence of sophomore forward Gerald Beverly (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili), who missed the game due to injury. The 6-foot-7 Beverly is averaging 14.9 points and leads the team in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and blocks (41).

Junior Mark Coppola (Williamsville N.Y./Williamsville South) dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Wildcats.  It was Coppola's third game this season with 10 or more assists.

Junior forward Michael Warner drained 3-of-4 three-pointers and scored 28 points for the Owls.

Daemen jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the Owls responded with an 11-2 run and took a 15-12 lead following a jumper by Aaron Hutchins with 12:03 left before intermission. Daemen responded with a 15-2 run in which Regan scored 11 points. Two free throws by Johnson with just under seven minutes to play in the half capped the run and gave the Wildcats a 27-17 lead. Daemen later took a 14-point lead following a triple by Greene with 3:54 left before the break, and the Wildcats took a 38-23 lead into halftime.

UMPI made things interesting by outscoring the Wildcats 13-4 over the first two minutes of the second half and cut the Daemen lead to six points, 42-36. Warner drilled three three-pointers during the outburst. The Wildcats regained a double-digit lead following back-to-back buckets by Sheehan and Regan, and Daemen later took a 58-41 lead following a three-pointer by sophomore Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda, N.Y/North Tonawanda) with 13:58 left.

Daemen held a 60-45 lead when the Wildcats put together a decisive 14-6 run. A conventional three-point play by freshman Supreme Hannah (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) with 7:54 left capped the spurt and gave the Wildcats a 23-point cushion, 74-51. UMPI came no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

Daemen shot 51-percent (19-37) in the second half and connected on 47-percent (33-71) of its shots overall. The Wildcats also connected on 22-of-27 free throws and posted a commanding 45-30 edge in rebounding.

UMPI, which entered the game averaging nine three-pointers a game, made just 1-of-9 three-point attempts in the first half and finished 6-of-18 from long range for the game.

Daemen remains in the North Country and will face the University of Maine-Fort Kent tomorrow (1/19) at 3 p.m. The Wildcats defeated UMFK, 96-67, last month at Lumsden Gymnasium.
