ROCHESTER, N.Y. - After a couple of postponements and even a cancellation, the Daemen College women's track and field team finally got the outdoor portion of their 2013-14 season underway by competing at the Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester at Fauver Stadium today.  Coach Jessica Gorski was focred to bring an abbreviated squad - just 14 athletes made the trip - after inclement weather caused the event to be moved from Saturday to Sunday.  With a small number of athletes, the Wildcats finished in 22nd place in the team standings.

Long distance runners Jordan Weir (Cato, N.Y./Cato-Meridian) and Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) were the top performers for Gorski's squad today.  Weir, a sophomore, took home 10th place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:50.88 while the freshman, Donahue, came in six seconds later (18.56.01) for 11th place.  The pair figures to be a solid combination for the Wildcats at the longer distances this spring after leading the cross country team to prominence last fall.

In mid-distance, sophomore Brooke Nola (Depew, N.Y./Depew) came in 26th in the 800 meter run (2:29.76) while freshman Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) was 34th with a time of 2:32.09.

Freshman Leah May (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) was the only sprinter to compete for Daemen.  She finished in 39th in the 400 meter dash (1:07.69) and 44th in the 200 meter dash (28.29 seconds).

In field events, veteran Ashley Pinette (Rowley, Mass./Westfield State University) took home a pair of top-20 finishes.  She earned a 16th-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.21 meters and also a 17th-place showing in the discus (30.14 meters).  She added a 28th-place finish the shot put as well (8.98 meters).

Freshman Toria Williams was tops for Daemen in the shot put, finishing in 13th place after a toss of 10.17 meters - one of just 14 competitors to break the 10-meter mark in the event.

Next up for Daemen is a trip back to Rochester on Saturday, April 12 for the ROC City Classic hosted by Nazareth College.
