SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis suffered a 5-4 defeat today in non-conference action against host Le Moyne College. The loss dropped Daemen to 4-3 overall this season, while Le Moyne, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, jumped to 5-3.
Daemen took a 2-1 lead after picking up wins in two-thirds of the doubles matches. Sophomore
Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and junior
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) were winners in the No. 2 slot, 8-6, over Le Moyne's Jason Barton and Steven Procopio. The Wildcats also picked up a point in No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles action however, Daemen could only muster two of the three points it needed to win the match. Kerr won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Adam Celata in the No. 5 singles slot, while teammate
Ethan Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) won by default at No. 6 singles.
Le Moyne's Barton and Benjamin Spoor earned key victories to help the Dolphins secure the match. Barton downed Wildcat freshman
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) in the No. 2 singles slot (6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4), rebounding from a one-sets-to-none deficit. Spoor made the same comeback in defeating Daemen junior
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) in the No. 3 singles position (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
Daemen returns to action on Monday, Mar. 9 when the Wildcats face West Chester University in a neutral site match to be held in Tampa, Fla. The match is the first of six for the Wildcats over five days in The Sunshine State.
