Catawba Blanks Men's Tennis

BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. - The Daemen College men's tennis team fell 5-7 overall this season following a 9-0 defeat to Catawba College in non-conference action at the University of South Florida Varsity Tennis Courts.

Catawba, an affiliate of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference, dropped just three games in doubles play, sweeping through those matches to establish an early 3-0 lead.

Singles play brought more of the same as Catawba completed a clean sweep of the Wildcats.  Pro set-scoring was used because of a rain storm that moved through the area prompting a late start to the match which was originally scheduled for noon today.

Daemen freshman Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was the closest to earning a point for the Wildcats.  Veitengruber fell, 9-7, in the No. 2 singles slot to the Indians' Jack Mordey.  It was just Veitengruber's fourth loss in singles play this season.  He leads the team with an 8-4 singles record.

Daemen's Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Ethan Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) all won games in their respective singles matches, but weren't able to seriously push their counterparts from Catawba.

Today's result marked just the second time that Daemen has been shutout this season.  Catawba improved to 9-5 with the victory.

Coach Stephen Beatty's squad closes their five-day, six-match trip to Florida by facing Southeastern University tomorrow (March 13) at 2 p.m. at the University of Tampa Tennis Complex.
