ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat to rival Roberts Wesleyan College here today at the Midtown Athletic Club. RWC, which is ranked eighth in the latest NCAA East Region poll, improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. Daemen dropped to 5-14 overall and 0-4 in the league.
The host Redhawks held a 2-1 lead after doubles play was completed. The team of Charles Farres and Robert Beer earned RWC an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over junior Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) and sophomore Ethan Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George). Daemen picked up a win at No. 2 doubles after sophomore Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and junior Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) posted an 8-4 victory over RWC's Gui Plentz de Liz and Dustin Eshleman. RWC took a 2-1 lead after Emanuel Rauchle and Rene Torti outlasted freshmen John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) and No. 3 doubles.
The Redhawks secured the win with straight-set wins in the first three singles matches. Wincowski turned in a solid effort for Daemen at No. 5 singles, before falling to Eshleman 6-3, 7-6.
Daemen is idle until Friday (April 17) when it plays a league match at Dowling College.
