Men's Tennis Closes Season On Winning Note

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) won a third set tie-break to deliver a 5-4 victory for the Daemen College men's tennis team over visiting St. John Fisher College at Miller Tennis Center this afternoon.

After falling behind in sets 1-0 in his No. 4 singles match vs. SJFC's Adam Moran, LeMar rebounded and evened the match at one-set apiece with a 6-2 win in the second.  It then took nine points for LeMar to secure the third-set tie-break, snapping a 4-all tie in the dual match and giving the Wildcats their second win in as many Friday's.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-1 lead after scoring doubles victories in the No. 2 and 3 slots.  Sophomore Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and junior Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) cruised to an 8-2 win in the No. 2 slot over SJFC's Kevin Kulawiec and Moran.  Likewise, the Wildcat duo of junior Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) and sophomore Ethan Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) scored an 8-2 win in the No. 3 position over the Cardinals' Dan Tedesco and Kyle Stitch.

Singles play did not go as smoothly for Daemen but coach Stephen Beatty's squad managed to pick up the requisite three points to pull out the match victory.  Along with LeMar, Daemen got singles wins from Kerr and freshman Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford).

Kerr breezed through his match in the No. 5 singles slot relatively unscathed, downing Tedesco 6-1, 6-3.  Veitengruber earned his team-leading 10th singles win of the season, defeating Jake Zarzycki 6-4, 6-3.

Today's match also marked the end of the line for Daemen senior Alex White (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich).  White, who has been a member of the team since its inception in 2012, appeared in his first singles match of the year, but fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Stitch.

With the non-conference win, Daemen closes its 2014-15 campaign at 7-16 overall.  SJFC falls to 8-8 on the season with their Empire 8 Conference season-finale vs. Ithaca College still on the horizon (Sunday, April 26).
