Men's Tennis Looks For Second D1 Win In As Many Seasons

THE LEAD
The Daemen College men's tennis team hosts Division I Niagara University in the Wildcats' first dual-match since Sept. 10...the Wildcats will be seeking their second win over a Division I program in team history after downing Coppin State (6-1) last April.

ON THE SIDELINES
Daemen: Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN SCOUTING REPORT (0-1, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 11 players from last year's team that finished 5-17 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference...gone is familiar face Gregory Lowe who was lost to graduation, leaving as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (32), total singles matches (77), singles winning percentage (.427), doubles victories (30), total doubles matched (77) and doubles winning percentage (.400)...among the returners is Mark Veitengruber who opens his junior season just eight singles wins why of breaking Lowe's program record...Veitengruber went 13-16 in singles play last season, establishing a new team record for singles wins in a season...also, senior John LeMar returns and he sits just nine doubles wins shy of breaking Lowe's program record...the Wildcats also return sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas who went 6-9 in singles and 7-10 in doubles last season...his season was interrupted by an injury at the end of the fall season, but his return to the lineup late in the spring coincided with Daemen winning three of their final five matches of the season...the Wildcats opened the season with a 9-0 loss in dual-match play to Fairmont State on Sept. 10, and they conclude tournament play at the Daemen Invitational this evening before hosting Niagara on Wednesday.
   
NIAGARA SCOUTING REPORT (0-0, 0-0 MAAC)
Niagara is a member of NCAA Division I and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference...head coach Mike Mucci returns six players from his 2015-16 team which finished sixth in the MAAC standings with a 2-5 conference record...the Purple Eagles finished 4-12 overall last season...among the returners is senior Francis Nadeau...the Quebec native led NU with six singles wins last season...behind Nadeau was Felipe Fuentes and Brent Boleslav who each earned five singles wins in 2015-16...Nadeau and Fuentes formed NU's top doubles pair, achieving four wins together last year...also back is MAAC All-Academic Team selection Jason Wisely...Wednesday's action marks the first dual-match of the season for NU...the Purple Eagles have opened the season by participating in three tournaments - the St. Joseph's Invitationa, the Binghamton Invitational, and most recently the Rocket Invitational.
