AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team wrapped up the competition at their own tournament, the Daemen Invitational, on Tuesday evening, with junior
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and sophomore
Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) claiming the title in the "A" doubles bracket.
The tournament, which began on Saturday, October 1, featured Roberts Wesleyan College, St. John Fisher College and Rochester Institute of Technology in addition to the hosts from Daemen.
The duo of Veitengruber and Milner emerged with an 8-4 win over RWC's Hugo Ball Green and Jose Carillo in the finals of the "A" doubles draw tonight. Â It was the third win of the tournament for the Daemen pair as they knocked off RIT's Roger Peckham and Hamza Khammash in the quarterfinals (8-2) and RWC's Gui Plentz de Liz and Dennis Barlotta in the semis (9-7).
The bracket was one match away from being an all-Daemen final, but Ball-Greene and Carillo defeated the Wildcats'
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and
John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) 8-5 in the semis to advance. Â Gonzalez Villegas and LeMar were 8-4 winners over RIT's Jared Ingoglia and Michael Peters in the quarterfinals.
RWC was able to exact some revenge with a win the "B" doubles final. Â Paul Langbroek and Mathew Cruz took down DC's
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) by the final score of 8-6. Â The Daemen duo cruised to the finals after downing SJF's Vincent Grasso and Michael Zintel without dropping a game (8-0).
In singles action, both Veitengruber and Gonzalez Villegas advanced to the "A" singles semifinals before falling to their respective opponents, both from Roberts Wesleyan. Â The "A" singles finals between RWC's Ball-Greene and Langbroek went unfinished, and will be completed on RWC's campus later this week.
The same can be said for the "B" singles finals which features RWC's Barlotta against his teammate Plentz de Liz. Â The latter won a three-set affair (6-7, 6-3, 1-0) in the semifinals over the Daemen freshman Wilde.
In the "C" singles draw, RWC's Carillo won 6-1, 7-6 over his teammate Cruz.
In the "D" singles draw, RWC's Dustin Eshleman won the bracket by default after downing Daemen freshman
James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) in the semis (6-2, 6-4). Â Schaab-Rozbicki picked up the first singles win of his career earlier in the tournament, defeating RWC's Joshua Moore (6-1, 6-0) in the pre-quarterfinals, before advancing past SJF's Vincent Grasso be default.
Daemen jumps back into dual-match play by hosting Division I Niagara University on Wednesday.
