HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season following a 7-2 victory over Houghton College this afternoon on the Houghton campus. Daemen improved to 1-2 on the year. Houghton, a NCAA Division III member, is now 1-1.
Daemen swept doubles play and took four of the six singles matches.
Sophomore Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) improved to 4-1 on the year in doubles play after posting an 8-4 victory at first singles over Zach Shilvock (Alexander, N.Y.) and Michael Cha (Bowie, Md.).
Daemen completed the doubles sweep with easy wins at second and third doubles. The tandem of Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Fabian Wilde Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) remained undefeated on the year after they prevailed 8-1 over Jordan Crouch (Filmore, N.Y.) and Jordan Scott (Burlington, ONT) at No. 2 doubles. David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Columbia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) downed Jake Fisler (Webster, N.Y.) and Adam Gerard (Greencastle, IN) 8-0 at third doubles.
Gonzalez, Wilde, Veitengruber and John LeMar picked up singles wins for Daemen. Gonzalez rallied to defeat Shilvock at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, while Wilde, Veitengruber and LeMar posted straight-set wins. Wilde defeated Cha, 6-3, 6-2 at second singles; Veitengruber downed Crouch, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and LeMar posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Scott at fourth singles.
Houghton avoided the sweep by posting wins at fifth and sixth singles. Fisler outlasted James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North), 7-5, 6-3; while Connor Barnes (Sodus, N.Y.) defeated Roberto Zambrano (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Broward College) 6-4, 6-1.
Daemen closes out the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule when it travels to the University of Findlay (Oct. 10) and Walsh University (Oct. 11) at the start of next week.
