Wildcats Close Fall Schedule With Two Road Matches

THE LEAD
The Daemen College men's tennis team concludes the abbreviated fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule by visiting University of Findlay and Walsh University early this week.

ON THE SIDELINES
Daemen: Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN SCOUTING REPORT (1-2, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 11 players from last year's team that finished 5-17 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference...gone is familiar face Gregory Lowe who was lost to graduation, leaving as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (32), total singles matches (77), singles winning percentage (.427), doubles victories (30), total doubles matched (77) and doubles winning percentage (.400)...among the returners is Mark Veitengruber who opens his junior season just eight singles wins why of breaking Lowe's program record...Veitengruber went 13-16 in singles play last season, establishing a new team record for singles wins in a season...also, senior John LeMar returns and he sits just nine doubles wins shy of breaking Lowe's program record...the Wildcats also return sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas who went 6-9 in singles and 7-10 in doubles last season...his season was interrupted by an injury at the end of the fall season, but his return to the lineup late in the spring coincided with Daemen winning three of their final five matches of the season...Daemen opened the season with a pair of dual-match losses to Fairmont State (9-0) and Division I Niagara (8-1) before jumping into the win column Saturday with a 7-2 defeat of Division III Houghton...Gonzalez Villegas, Veitengruber, LeMar and freshman Fabian Wilde all picked up points in both singles and doubles the Daemen victory...the Wildcats also competed recently at their own tournament, the Daemen Invitational, a four-team event which ran from Oct. 1-4...Veitengruber teamed with sophomore Justin Milner to claim the championship of the "A" doubles braket in the tournament...the duo has posted a 4-1 record together to lead the team in doubles wins thus far...LeMar (2-1), Gonzalez Villegas (2-2), Veitengruber (2-3) and Wilde (2-3) share the team lead in singles wins thus far.
   
FINDLAY SCOUTING REPORT (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC)
Findlay is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference...head coach Doug Linden has led the Oilers to a 33-29 mark over  the first three seasons of his tenure...the Oilers are coming off an 11-12 campaign in 2015-16...gone from that team is first-team All-GLIAC pick John Kidd who posted a team-bet 17-8 mark in singles play...sophomore Carlos Blanco, an honorable-mention All-GLIAC pick last year, returns after posting 11 singles wins...also back is Spaniard Oriol Ferrer, a first-team All-GLIAC pick, who posted a 15-5 singles mark last season with all 20 matches coming in the second singles position...the Oilers have competed just once so far this season, downing Cedarville 5-4 on Sept. 24...Blanco and Ferrer both posted singles wins, while freshman Mark Antoniuk's three-set singles win proved to be the difference in the match.

WALSH SCOUTING REPORT (3-1, 0-0 GLIAC)
Walsh is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference...head coach Bryan Whittaker is in his fifth season at the helm, having led the Cavaliers to a 38-54 record over his first four seasons...the Cavaliers are coming off a 2015-16 season in which they won half of their 24 matches, made their first GLIAC Tournament appearance, and attained their first-ever regional ranking at the NCAA Division II level...Czech Republic native Vasily Vidmanov, a second-team All-GLIAC honoree last season, leads the Cavaliers returners...also back is senior Ross Whittaker who earned honorable-mention All-GLIAC honors last year.
