Daemen Suffers Setback At West Virginia Wesleyan

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Daemen College men's tennis team opened a stretch of eight consecutive road matches with a 9-0 loss this afternoon against West Virginia Wesleyan College at Ridgeview Racquet Club.

The loss today, Daemen's eighth-straight, sends the Wildcats to 2-10 overall in dual matches this season.  It came against one of the premier programs in the Mountain East Conference and the Atlantic Region of NCAA Division II.  WVW, now 12-1 this season, has advanced to the MEC tournament finals in each of the last two seasons, and they ended the 2014-15 campaign ranked third in the Atlantic Region.

The host Bobcats opened today's action by sweeping through doubles competition.  Daemen's top pair of sophomore Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and freshman Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) pushed WVW's Ferran Berga (Barcelona, Spain) and Nathan Sabate (Lleida, Spain) in first doubles, but fell 8-6, setting the tone for a Bobcat sweep.  Pedro Nassar (Margarita, Venezuela) and Ramon Rodriguez (Porlamar, Venezuela) took down DC's Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) in second doubles (8-3), and the pair of Jacobo Rendon (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Andre Fernandes (Salvador, Brazil) were 8-5 winners in third doubles over DC's brother tandem of John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).

The Wildcats could not turn things around in singles competition as WVW completed the shutout with wins in all six singles matchups.  Veitengruber and Sabate had the most competitive match of the lot in first singles with the latter victorious 6-4, 7-6.  Andrew LeMar nearly pushed his third singles match with Rodriguez to a deciding third set, but fell in two - 6-2, 7-5.

Daemen will return to Ridgeview Racquet Club tomorrow for a dual match versus Davis & Elkins College of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.  That one is set for an 11 a.m. start.
