AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team saw its modest two match winning streak come to an end today after dopping an 8-1 decision to defending East Coast Conference champions from N.Y. Institute of Technology at the courts behind Sweet Home High School.
Daemen, which had defeated Division I Coppin State University (6-1) and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference affiliate University of the Sciences (5-4) last weekend, saw their quest for their first ECC win of the season halted by the visiting Bears who were picked to win the league once again this season. Â The loss drops Daemen to 4-16 overall, and 0-4 in ECC play and it officially eliminates them from contention for an ECC Tournament berth. Â NYIT improves to 12-3 overall, and a perfect 3-0 in league play with the win, completing a sweep of their upstate N.Y. tour when paired with earlier wins over Le Moyne College (9-0) and Roberts Wesleyan College (9-0).
The loss was Daemen's seventh this season against teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
The visitors opened things up today by sweeping through doubles play. Â The Wildcats battled, especially in third doubles where the duo of
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia, Liceo Frances de Pereira) suffered an 8-4 defeat to Tomas Lieb and Alexandre Martinez.
In singles action, NYIT sealed their dual-match victory with wins in the first, second, third, fourth and sixth positions. Â Matej Selecky, David Jiang, the ECC Preseason Player of the Year Lieb, Rares Ispas and Kevin Hunyh were the singles winners for the guests.
Daemen avoided the shutout with a hard-fought, three-set victory (6-4, 1-6, 1-0) in fifth singles from freshman
Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) over NYIT's Jamie Salvador.
The Wildcats return to non-conference play with a trip to Millersville University on Monday (April 18) before closing out their 2015-16 campaign with an ECC contest against rival Roberts Wesleyan next Wednesday (April 20).
