MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Daemen College men's tennis team picked up its third shutout victory of the season today, blanking host Millersville University 9-0 in non-conference action at the McComsey Tennis Courts on the MU campus.
Daemen has now won three of its last four matches to sit at 5-16 overall this season. Â The shutout win today was Daemen's first since recording back-to-back blankings of Division III opponents Houghton College and Elmira College in their final match of the fall season and their opening match of the spring season, respectively. Â It was also the program's first-ever shutout of a Division II opponent.
Millersville, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fell to 1-12 on the season with their 10th consecutive loss today. Â Since going 13-7 in the 2010-11 season, the Marauders are just 11-59 over the last five seasons.
Daemen opened things up by sweeping through doubles play for the second time in the last four matches. Â Sophomore
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and freshman
Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) constituted the top pairing in today's lineup submitted by third-year head coach
Stephen Beatty. Â The duo took down MU's Niko Mucci and Dylan Ryan 8-5. Â Seniors
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) earned their team-leading sixth win of the season as a pair, downing MU's Christian Boyer and Christian Akerely in a tight 9-7 match in second doubles. And, freshman
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) once again teamed with redshirt-freshman
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) to blank the Marauders' Anthony Jadus and David Yunginger 8-0 in thid doubles.
Veitengruber, Gonzalez Villegas, LeMar, Milner and Lowe all picked wins in singles play, as did junior
John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) whose 6-1, 6-3 win in sixth singles over Noah Ginder sealed the shutout. Â It was his seventh singles win of the season.
Veitengruber was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Ryan, the Marauders' top returner from last season, in first singles. Â It was Veitengruber's team-leading 13th singles victory of the season.
The younger LeMar isn't far behind as he earned his 11th singles win, a 6-4, 6-0 dispatching of Akerley in third singles.
Gonzalez Villegas evened his singles record at 4-4 since returning from an injury that cost him the first 10 matches of the spring season. Â He defeated Jadus 6-0, 6-1 in second singles, and is now 6-8 overall in singles play this season.
Milner has now won four straight singles matches after his 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Mucci in fourth singles.
The veteran Lowe picked up his eighth singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Boyer in fifth singles. Â He's now 5-5 in his last 10 singles outings.
The win today sends the Wildcats into their final match of the season with some momentum. Â Daemen plays host to East Coast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan this Wednesday, April 20 at the Williamsville South High School courts beginning at 4 p.m.
