ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College men's tennis team came up short in their quest for a second victory this weekend, falling 7-2 today against Hillsdale College in a non-conference dual match played at the Westwood Racquet Club.
Daemen, which picked up a 7-2 win Friday evening vs. Salem International University, sees its record move to 2-7 this season. Â Hillsdale, a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, picked up its second win in as many days, improving to 3-2 this season. Â The Chargers defeated Mercyhurst University yesterday (5-4) in a match that was also played at the Westwood Racquet Club.
Daemen got on the board with a win in second doubles by sophomores
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and
Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College). Â They scored an 8-5 win over HC's John Ciraci (Troy, Mich.) and Charlie Adams (Knoxville, Tenn.) to improve to 2-1 as a doubles pair this season.
But, the Chargers grabbed points in first and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead in the match.  Justin Hyman (Oakland Township, Mich.) and Dugan Delp (Toledo, Ohio) were 8-2 winners in the top spot over DC's
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and
Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca).  And, Julien Clouette (Varennes, Que.) teamed with Milan Mirkovic (Split, Croatia) to down DC's
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) 8-5.
Needing four of the six points in singles play to flip the script, Daemen got only part of the way there with a win in fifth singles by Milner. Â He survived a three-set affair against Clouette, winning 6-3, 3-6, 1-0. Â Hillsdale swept the five remaining matches, including competitive affairs in the first, third and fourth positions.
Daemen returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24 when it hosts Davis and Elkins College for a non-league dual match at Miller Tennis Center.  The match, which gets underway at 7 p.m., is the first of three in as many days for the Wildcats next weekend.
