PSAC Powerhouse Edinboro Tops Daemen

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered its third loss in as many days, falling 8-1 this afternoon in a non-conference dual match against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference powerhouse Edinboro University at Miller Tennis Center.

Daemen's record drops to 2-10 this season, while the visiting Fighting Scots improved to 4-1.  Edinboro is the three-time defending champion of the PSAC, and the 2016 Atlantic Regional champion.

Upset-minded Daemen got on the board with an 8-4 win in the third doubles position by Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit).  The Daemen duo, paired together for the first time this season, took down EU's Mauricio Santos (Sao Paulo, Spain) and Kolja Hein (Darmstadt, Germany).

Edinboro took the remaining points in doubles play, winning 8-5 and 8-4 in the first and second positions, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead as the match shifted to singles play.

The Fighting Scots went on to sweep all six singles matchups, led by Vitor Albanese's (Barueri, Brazil) straight-sets win (6-1, 6-2) over DC's David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) in the first position.  Albanese is the reigning PSAC Player of the Year, and his win today moves him to 16-3 in singles play this season.

Santos, a first-team All-PSAC pick last year, won in the second singles position over DC's Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College) who retired after dropping the first set 6-1.

The most competitive singles matches of the day came in the third and fourth positions.  Daemen's Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) fought valiantly but fell to Daniel Fernandez (San Jose, Costa Rica) 7-6, 7-5.  EU's Kevin Mboko (Burlington, Canada) was a 6-4, 7-6 winner over Wildcat freshman Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler).

Mateus Santos (Brasilia, Brazil) and Hein picked up the remaining singles wins for EU.  Santos' victory (6-2, 6-2) came in the fifth position over Milner, snapping the Daemen sophomore's four-match winning streak.

Daemen returns to action with a pair of non-conference home matches next weekend - Saturday, March 4 vs. Post University and Sunday, March 5 vs. Millersville University.
