Men's Tennis Plays Four Times In As Many Days This Week

THE SERVE
The Daemen College men's tennis team treks southwest for matches in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky this week...all told, Daemen will play four times over four days this week.

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN GROUND STROKES (3-11, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 11 players from last year's team that finished 5-17 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference...gone is familiar face Gregory Lowe who was lost to graduation, leaving as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (32), total singles matches (77), singles winning percentage (.427), doubles victories (30), total doubles matches (77) and doubles winning percentage (.400)...among the returners is Mark Veitengruber who went 13-16 in singles play last season, establishing a new team record for singles wins in a season...also, senior John LeMar returns...the Wildcats also return sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas who went 6-9 in singles and 7-10 in doubles last season...his season was interrupted by an injury at the end of the fall season, but his return to the lineup late in the spring coincided with Daemen winning three of their final five dual matches of the season...LeMar teamed with his brother, red-shirt sophomore Andrew LeMar, to win 8-2 in third doubles during Daemen's 9-0 defeat of Millersville on Mar. 5, securing the elder LeMar's 31st career doubles win to break Lowe's program record...John LeMar also picked up his 25th career singles win a 7-2 defeat of Salem International on Feb. 17...the Wildcats' win over Millersville in their last outing snapped a five-match slide...freshman Fabian Wilde picked up wins in both singles and doubles against Millersville and was named the ECC Rookie of the Week...Veitengruber and sophomore Justin Milner share the team lead in singles wins with five this season...senior Adam Kerr has emerged to win three-straight doubles matches, two with Milner and a third with Gonzalez Villegas...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
FRANKLIN GROUND STROKES (1-1, 0-0 HCAC)
Franklin is a member of NCAA Division III and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference...the Grizzlies are led by long-time head coach Rusty Hughes who is in his 17th season with their men's tennis program...the 2005 HCAC Co-Coach of the Year has twice guided the Grizzlies to runner-up finishes at the HCAC Championship Tournament...Franklin returns six players from its 2015-16 roster which achieved an overall record of 6-10 and an HCAC record of 4-4...the Grizzlies qualified for the HCAC Championship Tournament where their season ended with an opening-round loss to Hanover...leading the team's returners is a trio of All-HCAC performers...senior Ethan Caldwell and junior Alex Hammer were each first-team all-league picks, while junior Kyle Sauley earned honorable mention all-league honors...Caldwell and Hammer teamed together in the top doubles position last season, posting a 10-4 record together...both players posted six singles wins to share the team lead as well...Monday's match will be Franklin's first since splitting a pair of duals last fall...the Grizzlies downed Division II independent Oakland City 8-1 on Sept. 18, before dropping a 5-4 decision to NAIA affiliate Indiana-East on Sept. 25...the Grizzlies were picked fourth in the HCAC preseason poll.

EARLHAM GROUND STROKES (3-2, 0-0 HCAC)
Earlham is a member of NCAA Division III and the Heartland Athletic Conference...the Quakers are led by first-year head coach Shawn Hyden who takes over a program that has participated in the HCAC Championship Tournament in each of the last six seasons, while also advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year from 2011-14...the Quakers bring back seven players from their 2015-16 roster which went 12-11 overall and 6-2 in HCAC play, finishing second in the final regular season league standings...Earlham's season came to an end following a 5-2 loss to Transylvania in the HCAC Tournament semifinals...among the team's returners is junior Vitalii Stadnyk, the 2015-16 HCAC Most Valuable Player...Stadynk, a Ukrainian native, went 18-5 in both singles and doubles play last season...the Quakers also return honorable mention All-HCAC picks Nicola Manni, Adam Schwartz and Vojislav Tatarevic...Earlham is coming off a split of two dual matches on March 4, defeating Allegheny (8-1) and falling to nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve (9-0)...the Quakers were picked second in the HCAC preseason poll.

SOUTHERN INDIANA GROUND STROKES (8-5, 0-0 GLVC)
USI is a member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference...the Screaming Eagles are led by alumnus Chris Crawford who has posted a 124-42 record over his first eight seasons on the job...USI has made 13 NCAA Tournament berths since the 1999-2000 season, including a current streak of seven consecutive...six players return to the Screaming Eagles after helping them to a 17-6 overall record and a 5-1 GLVC record in 2015-16...USI fell in the GLVC Tournament championship to Indianapolis, but earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where their season ended in the opening round of the Midwest Regional with a 5-4 loss to Drury...among the team's returners is a pair of All-GLVC selections in junior Samuel Kiladejo and sophomore James Hardiman...Kiladejo went 14-12 in singles play and 17-9 in doubles play last season to earn All-GLVC honors for the second-straight season...Hardiman became the fourth USI freshman since 2010 to earn all-league honors after posting a 16-5 mark in singles play and a 20-3 record in doubles action...after splitting their first eight matches of the season, the Screaming Eagles are 4-1 since Feb. 24...USI had a three-match winning streak halted with a 7-2 loss to Georgia College on March 8, but rebounded the following day with a 6-3 win over Alabama-Huntsville...USI hosts Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday before Daemen heads to town later in the week...Hardiman leads the team with a 16-4 record in singles play, including an 8-1 mark when on the first singles court...freshman Denis Davydov(12-6 singles, 11-4 doubles), Aaron Barris (10-8 singles, 11-7 doubles and Kiladejo (7-10 singles, 11-6 doubles) have also produced for USI this season...the Screaming Eagles were picked second in the GLVC East Division preseason poll.

BELLARMINE GROUND STROKES (3-8, 0-0 GLVC)
Bellarmine is a member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference...the Knights are led by head coach John Mican who is in his seventh season at the helm...Mican returns seven players from his 2015-16 roster which achieved an overall record of 6-13 and a GLVC mark of 1-5...seniors Zachary Kuo and Jose Legarreta, who tied for the team lead with nine singles wins a season ago, headline the Knights' returners this season...the duo also teamed together to post a 10-8 mark in doubles play last year...after winning three-straight matches from Feb. 19-Mar. 5, the Knights have dropped three in a row heading into Thursday's match with the Wildcats...after a tight 4-3 loss to Division I Alabama A&M, the Knights fell to Division II foes North Alabama (9-0) and Alabama-Huntsville (8-1) last week...Legarreta leads the team with an 11-5 mark in singles play this season, while Kuo has posted a 10-7 mark...the duo is again pairing together in doubles, posting an 11-6 mark together...BU was picked fifth in the GLVC East Division preseason poll.
