Veitengruber Matches Program Record For Career Singles Wins

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) earned the 32nd singles win of his career to tie the program record while leading the Daemen College men's tennis team to its third-straight win this evening, defeating host Earlham College 5-4 in non-conference action at the Force Sports Center.

Veitengruber defeated EC's Adarsh Singh 7-6, 6-0 on the second singles court to pull into a tie for the all-time team record with Gregory Lowe who posted 32 singles victories between 2012-16.  Veitengruber has now won four-straight singles matches and he leads the team with seven singles wins this season.

The dual-match win pushes Daemen's record to 5-11 this season, matching the team's win total from all of the 2015-16 season when it went 5-17.  It also puts Daemen on the second three-match winning streak in team history, and the first since starting the 2014-15 season at 4-0.

Earlham, a member of NCAA Division III which was picked second in this season's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll,  dropped to 3-3 following tonight's loss.  Daemen has now won six-straight matches against Division III opponents, running its record to 19-10 all-time in such matches.

In addition to Veitengruber, Daemen got singles wins from David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira), Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valenca, Spain/American International College).  The four singles wins helped Daemen rally from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play.

Gonzalez Villegas has now won three-straight singles matches after an impressive straight-sets takedown (6-4, 7-6) of EC's Vitalii Stadnyk, the 2015-16 HCAC Player of the Year, on the first singles court.  Wilde also won his third-straight singles match, downing Fernando Bulnes Aramburu 6-4, 6-3 on the third singles court.  And, Ruiz Martinez earned his third-straight singles win, rallying after dropping the first set against Aleksandr Sergeev on the fourth singles court to win 0-6, 6-3, 1-0.

Daemen's lone point in doubles action came on the second court as Gonzalez Villegas and Ruiz Martinez teamed up to bounce EC's Sergeev and Joaquin Lerner 8-6.  It was the team-leading fifth win this season for the Daemen duo.

Daemen returns to action Wednesday (Mar. 15) against the University ot Southern Indiana.
