Southern Indiana Snaps Daemen's Winning Streak

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Daemen College men's tennis team saw its three-match winning streak come to end this afternoon following a 9-0 loss to Southern Indiana University in a non-conference match held at the Evansville Tennis Center.

Daemen dropped to 5-12 on the year. USI, which has now won six of its last seven matches, improved to 10-5. USI is a member of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference and was voted second in the GLVC East Division preseason poll. The Screaming Eagles went 17-6 last spring and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the seventh-straight season.

USI junior James Hardiman (Backwell Bristol, United Kingdom) improved to 17-4 overall in singles play this year following a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Daemen sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) at first singles. The loss snapped a streak of three-straight singles wins for Gonzalez.

Hardiman also teamed up with freshman Denis Davydov (Chorvatsky Grob, Slovakia) to post an 8-5 win over Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) and junior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) at No.1 doubles.

Daemen's pairing of Gonzalez and sophomore Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valenca, Spain/American International College) at No. 2 doubles also suffered an 8-5 setback to junior Sam Kiladejo (London, England) senior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Ga.).

In addition to Hardiman, USI got straight-set singles wins from Davydov, Kiladejo, Barris and sophomores Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) and Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Ind.). Wilde and Martinez also saw their streaks of three-straight singles wins come to an end. Wilde suffered a 6-2, 6-4 set back to Kiladejo at #3 singles, while Martinez lost at #4 singles (6-1, 6-2) to Barris.

Daemen closes out its four-match road trip tomorrow (March 16) when it travels to Louisville, Ky. to face Bellarmine Universirty.
