Men's Tennis Picks Up Non-League Win

Wildcats Down Caldwell 7-2

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Daemen College men's tennis team got off the proverbial schneid today by scoring a 7-2 victory in non-conference action vs. Caldwell University.

The win this afternoon snaps a four-match drought for the Wildcats, a stretch that included a pair of one-point defeats.  Daemen is now 6-15 overall, exceeding last season's win total and moving within two wins of breaking the program record for wins in a season.

Caldwell, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, suffered its second-straight defeat, falling to 2-3 on the season.

Coach Stephen Beatty's Daemen squad took a 2-1 lead in the match following doubles play.  Sophomores David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College) continued their strong play with an 8-5 win on the second doubles court over CU's Yuvraj Bains (Howrah, India) and Ferdinand Schnitzer (Mossingen, Germany).  The Daemen duo has now won three-straight matches, moving to 8-5 together this season.  Individually, Gonzalez Villegas extends his program record for doubles wins in a season to 12.

Teaming together for the first time in four matches, brothers John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) bounced CU's James Bojko (Bayville, N.J.) and Ulysses Leon Farr (Sparta, N.J.) 8-1 on the third doubles court.  John, a senior, extends his program record for career doubles wins to 33.

As the match shifted to singles play, Daemen's dominance continued.  The Wildcats picked up points on the first, second, third, fourth and sixth singles courts.

Gonzalez Villegas led the way, picking up his eighth singles win of the season with a three-set defeat of Maximilian Ziegler (Erfurt, Germany).  After taking the first set 7-5, the Daemen sophomore stumbled in the second as Ziegler evened up the match with a 6-0 set.  But, Gonzalez Villegas regrouped with a 6-2 win in the third to take the match.  Ziegler was a second-team All-CACC selection last season.

Junior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), who recently became the program's all-time leader in career singles wins, picked up singles win No. 34 with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Lukas Lemke (Hamelin, Germany).

Ruiz Martinez stayed hot with his fourth-straight singles win.  He barely broke a sweat in defeating Schnitzer in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) without dropping a game.  Ruiz Martinez and Veitengruber lead the team with nine singles wins apiece this season.

Additional singles wins today came from freshman Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) and senior Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit).  Both dropped only one game in their respective matches.  Wilde took down Bojko 6-1, 6-0, and Kerr ousted Farr 6-0, 6-1.

Daemen returns to East Coast Conference play on Tuesday, April 11 at rival Roberts Wesleyan College.
