Veitengruber Adds To Singles Win Total At ITA Regional Tourney By: Mike Miranto, Associate A.D. for Communications Men's Tennis | 9/23/2017 7:40:00 PM FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) picked up a pair of singles victories to pace the Daemen College men's tennis team over the last two days at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championship tournament being held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. As tournament play got underway Friday, Veitengruber scored back-to-back wins in the qualifying draw and was the lone Daemen player to advance into the tournament's main singles draw. Veitengruber first defeated Joe Alvord of Post University (8-5), and then cruised past Matthew Toombs of Franklin Pierce University (8-1). In today's opening round of the main singles draw, Veitengruber bowed out following a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Bentley University's Dylan Granat. Daemen's all-time leader in career singles wins, Veitengruber increased his record total to 37. He's now 3-2 in singles play this season. Freshman Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany), fresh off his singles draw championship at last weekend's Daemen Invitational Tournament, extended his winning streak to four-straight with an 8-3 defeat of Post's Samuel Urban in the opening round of the qualifying draw Friday. But, the Daemen greenhorn suffered defeat for the first time a collegiate player, falling 8-6 against Alexis Baguelin of the University of the District of Columbia in his bid to advance to the main draw. Juniors Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) and David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia), sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and freshmen Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) and Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) were also in action for Daemen in the qualifying draw, but failed to advance. In the main doubles draw, Daemen went 2-3 overall. Classmates Ruiz Martinez and Gonzalez Villegas teamed up to defeat Matt Cruz and Joshua Moore of Roberts Wesleyan College, 8-4, in the opening round. They would drop an 8-2 match in the second round to UDC's Rok Bozic and Diego Pinto, the tournament's No. 2 seed in the doubles draw. Veitengruber and Williamson III also advanced into the second round with an 8-6 victory over RWC's Tim Nacca and Dustin Eshleman. They were eliminated by Bentley's Brendan McCarthy and George Samander who won 8-2 in the second round. Georg and Wilde, who advanced to the finals of their doubles draw last weekend, couldn't escape the first round this time around, falling 8-3 to Andres Hernandez and Jason Barton of Le Moyne College.
