Boyar, Swiniarski Named Student-Athletes Of The Month By: By Tom McDermott, Sports Information Consultant General | 10/1/2018 3:18:00 PM AMHERST, N.Y. – Junior Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) of the women's soccer team and sophomore Mike Swiniarski (Akron, N.Y.) of the men's cross country team have been named the Daemen College Student-Athletes of the Month presented by Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC for September, 2018. Boyar scored nine of Daemen's 14 goals during the month of September and led the Wildcats to a 4-4-0 month. She scored at least one goal in six of the eight games and netted three game-wining goals. The highlight of the month came on September 15 when she registered her first career hat trick—including the "golden goal" in overtime—to help the Wildcats rally to a 3-2 win over Molloy College. That effort earned her East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. A week later she netted the game-tying goal and later the game-winner in overtime, as the Wildcats rallied again for a 3-2 win over longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College. She capped the month by scoring Daemen's first goal in a 2-1 win over regionally-ranked New York Institute of Technology. Boyar has scored a goal in seven of Daemen's nine games this year and has led the Wildcats to a 5-4-0 overall record and a 3-1-0 mark in the East Coast Conference. She leads the league in goals (10), points (21) and shots (57), and is tied for the league-lead in game-winning goals (4). She is just the second player in team history to record double-digit goals in back-to-back seasons, joining Daemen Hall of Famer Kim Walker who did so in three straight seasons (2003, 2004, 2005). A third-team All-ECC selection last fall after totaling 11 goals and 25 points, Boyar has started all 42 games over her career and has led the team in goals and points the past two seasons. She has totaled 27 career goals, eight career assists and 62 career points, and ranks fourth in career goals and fifth in career points among Daemen's all-time leaders. She has also totaled 11 career game-winning goals, and the Wildcats are 14-5-1 since she joined the program when she scores at least one goal. The Daemen women's soccer team has won four of its last five games and returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 3) when it travels to nationally-ranked Mercy College for an ECC game. Swiniarski was the top Daemen runner in each of the team's three races last month. He collected East Coast Conference Runner of the Week honors after placing first overall at the season-opening Daniel Walker Invitational hosted by Buffalo State College on September 1. Swiniarski outlasted teammate Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y.) to finish first among the 42 runners. Swiniarski finished the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:01—58 seconds better than his time of 17:59 last year—and edged Canales (17:07) by just six seconds. It marked the first career win for Swiniarski and he became just the third Daemen runner to post a race victory since the Wildcats ascended to the NCAA Division II level in 2013. After placing 43rd out of 215 runners at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on September 15, Swiniarski capped the the month by placing 14th out of 232 runners at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College on September 22. His time of 26:34.9 was a personal-best time for an 8,000-meter race and marks the first time in his brief career that he has finished an 8K race in under 27 minutes. Swiniarski has competed in all 10 races over the past two seasons and has posted two career top-10 finishes. He narrowly missed earning All-ECC honors as a rookie after placing 15th out of 72 runners at the 2017 ECC Championships with a time of 27:05.7. The Daemen cross country teams return to action Saturday (Oct. 6) when they take part in the Highlander Invitational hosted by Houghton College. Additional student-athletes considered for Athlete of the Month honors included Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) of the women's triathlon team, Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) of the women's cross country team, Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio) of the women's volleyball team, Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) of the women's tennis team, Giacomo Bacigalupo (Lavagna, Italy) of the men's soccer team and David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) of the men's tennis team.
