Men's Soccer Falls at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Daemen College men's soccer team suffered its third consecutive East Coast Conference loss following a 3-1 setback at the University of Bridgeport this afternoon at Knights Field.

Daemen, which won its first two ECC games for the first time ever earlier this year, dropped to 4-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the league. The win pushes Bridgeport to 6-4-0 overall and 3-3 in the ECC. Bridgeport is one of three teams with three league wins and looking up at conference co-leaders Mercy College and Long Island University-Post in the conference standings. The Wildcats remained winless (0-6) all-time against Bridgeport.

Daemen got down early after letting in a goal in the 11th minute. As the ball bounced around in the box, freshman Oscar Facey (Trangsund, Sweden) finished into the top of the net off a cross from junior Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway).

The Purple Knights' second goal came right before halftime. After a Daemen foul on the right wing outside the box, Bridgeport had one last set piece before the end of the half. Facey put a cross into the box off the free kick right to the head of senior defender Andrew Quintos (Kearny, N.J.), who finished on the left side of the net for his first goal of the season.

The most dangerous lead in soccer was possessed by Bridgeport coming into the second half. The Wildcats cut the lead to 2-1 when senior midfielder Zackary Elliot (Bolton, Ont.) put a cross in from the right wing at freshman goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany). The ball curled inside the post to beat Tofern in the 65th minute, giving Elliot his second goal on the season.

However, Vadseth put the game away in the 73rd minute for the Purple Knights. The Wildcats gave the ball away in their own third and Vadseth capitalized with his sixth goal this season, which ranks third in the ECC. Facey and Erlend Skagestad (Mjoendalen, Norway) were both credited with an assist.

Both teams were even in every statistic except shots and shots on goal. Both teams registered six saves, eight corner kicks and 13 fouls apiece. The Purple Knights rattled off 23 shots (nine on goal), while the Wildcats managed just 12 shots (seven on goal). Freshman keeper Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany), who ranks second in the ECC in saves with 45, went the distance in net for the Wildcats and registered six saves. Tofern also posted six saves for the hosts.

The Wildcats next game comes against No. 15 Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m.
