Spring Portion Of 2018-19 Men's Tennis Schedule Announced 11/28/2018 3:17:00 PM By: By Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team will resume its 2018-19 season with a non-conference road match at Mercyhurst University on Sunday, Feb. 10 head coach Kerry McDermott announced today along with 18 additional matches in the team's spring schedule. McDermott's squad will play 14 road matches and the spring docket includes the team's five-match East Coast Conference slate. Highlights of the team's spring schedule include: Home non-conference matches at Miller Tennis Center vs. Walsh University (Feb. 16), Millersville University (Mar. 23) At least two matches on the program's first-ever trip to the state of California; while there, the Wildcats will face Azusa Pacific University and Concordia University, both on Mar. 16; additional matches still may be added on this trip. Two matches against NCAA Division I opponents: at Coppin State University on Apr. 6 and at Niagara University on Apr. 23; the Wildcats defeated Coppin State 6-1 in their first-ever win against a Division I opponent on Apr. 8, 2016 East Coast Conference season opener at New York Institute of Technology on Mar. 30; NYIT is the defending ECC regular season champion East Coast Conference home matches vs. Queens College (Apr. 12) and St. Thomas Aquinas College (Apr. 13); Queens is the defending ECC tournament champion East Coast Conference and Thruway Rivalry match at Roberts Wesleyan on Apr. 9 For a complete look at the Wildcats' 2018-19 schedule, click HERE. The Wildcats' eight-man roster features seven newcomers, including senior Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) who has earned second team All-ECC honors in each of the last two seasons. Ruiz Martinez is coming off a 2017-18 season in which he established new team records for singles wins (17) and singles winning percentage (.654). Senior David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia), junior Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and sophomore Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) also return. Gonzalez Villegas and Wilde rank fourth and sixth respectively on Daemen's all-time wins list (combined singles and doubles). Williamson III was a part of 13 doubles wins last season, more than any other player in team history for a single season. The Wildcats will enter the spring season with an 0-2 overall record after dropping contests to East Region powers Merrimack College and Southern New Hampshire University during their brief fall season. The fall season also included arguably the Wildcats best-ever showing at the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championships with Ruiz Martinez and Gonzalez Villegas advancing to the doubles draw quarterfinals, while Ruiz Martinez and Wilde also earned singles victories to advance into the main singles draw.
