Epic Comeback Sends Daemen To Final Day Of ECC Championship

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, N.Y. - Never say die.

That was the mantra of the Daemen College women's bowling team as they rallied from a 3-0 deficit to stave off elimination in a Baker format best-of-seven match at the East Coast Conference Championship tournament today against Chestnut Hill College. Coach David Zajac's squad regrouped and rattled off wins in four consecutive games, sending them into the tournament's final four and eliminating Chestnut Hill in the process.

The epic comeback wasn't the only match that took all seven games to decide today. The fifth-seeded Wildcats, who advanced into the winner's bracket quarterfinals with a 4-1 defeat of Saint Thomas Aquinas College yesterday, knocked off fourth-seeded Felician University 4-3 in their first match of the day. That sent Daemen into the winner's bracket semifinals where they suffered a 4-0 defeat to top-seeded Lincoln Memorial University. Following the tournament's double elimination format, the loss sent the Wildcats into the elimination bracket and setup the come-from-behind win over Chestnut Hill.

Sophomore Rachel Steele (Rensselaer, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with a 16.9 pins-per-frame scoring average over 36 frames today. Freshman Katlyn Newberry (Rochester, N.Y.) and Adrianna Pencek (Dunkirk, N.Y.) also played well, scoring 15.8 and 15.4 pins per frame respectively.

Today's results push Daemen's record to 35-16 this season.

When play resumes tomorrow morning (8 a.m.), Daemen will take on third-seeded and nationally-ranked Adelphi University (No. 11 in latest National Tenpin Coaches Association poll). The Wildcats are 0-4 all-time against the highly-touted Panthers, including a tight 1007-991 loss in round robin play yesterday.

Lincoln Memorial meets second-seeded Franklin Pierce University in the winner's bracket finals when play resumes tomorrow. The loser of that match will meet the Daemen/Adelphi winner for the right to advance to the tournament finals.
