General 4/27/2018 9:04:00 PM By Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications Keem Named Daemen's 2017-18 Male Newcomer of the Year AMHERST, N.Y. - Versatile freshman Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) of the Daemen College men's soccer team has been named the College's 2017-18 Male Newcomer of the Year. The announcement was made this evening at the Daemen ESPY's, the Athletic Department's awards gala held at Lumsden Gymnasium, and the award was presented by alumnus and former women's basketball player Lia Zahn '13. Keem, who spent time playing forward, midfield and defense last fall, played an integral role in leading the Wildcats to a 7-11 overall record, matching the program record for wins in a season, and a 3-6 mark in East Coast Conference play, marking the most league victories in team history. He finished the season with team-highs of nine goals and 22 points, becoming the first Daemen player with at least nine goals and 20 points since Kyle Clifford in 2013 (10 gls, 22 pts). Keem finished the season as the top freshman scorer in the ECC, and he ranked among the overall league leaders in goals (7th), points (6th) and shooting percentage (.429 - 5th), stats that helped him earn third team All-ECC honors - Daemen's first all-conference selection at the Division II level. A two-time ECC Rookie of the Week selection (Sept. 25-Oct.1, Oct. 9-15), Keem registered all 22 of his points in the final 10 games of the season, helping Daemen to a 5-5 record in those contests. He posted two multi-goal games and five games with three or more points. Keem was also named the Division II Hero of the Week by herosports.com in mid October. Keem's offensive output helped Daemen rank third in total goals (39) and fourth in goals per game (2.17) among ECC teams this season. After posting just three multi-goal games in 2016, Daemen had 11 last fall and their 39 goals marked the team's highest total since 2011 when they scored 43 times. Keem becomes the second recipient of Daemen's Male Newcomer of the Year Award which was instituted in 2017. Men's basketball player Jeff Redband was the inaugural recipient at this event last year. Nominations for the award are made by Office of Athletic Communications and nominees are then voted on by the department's head coaches and other full-time staffers. Additional nominees this year included Rodney Corbin (Williamsville, N.Y.) from the men's track and field team, Alonzo Rodriguez-Spencer (Buffalo, N.Y.) from the men's cross country and track and field teams, Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) from the men's basketball team, and Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) from the men's tennis team.
