NORTH CANTON, Ohio — The Daemen College men's soccer team opened its 2018 season with a 4-0 loss to Walsh University here tonight.
It also marked the 2018 season-opener for Walsh, which is a member of NCAA Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). The Cavaliers posted a 7-10-1 record last year and were voted ninth in the G-MAC preseason poll. Daemen, which is coming off a 7-11-0 season, was looking to win its season-opener for the first time since 2014. The Wildcats are a member of the East Coast Conference and were voted ninth in the ECC preseason poll.
Junior Myles Cornwall (Ottawa, Ontario) led the hosts with two goals and two assists, while classmate Dwight Van Dyke (Toronto, Ontario) added two goals and an assist.
Walsh took control six minutes into the game when Cornwall scored twice in the span of 1:07. Cornwall, who totaled six goals last fall, opened the scoring at the 5:49 mark, and he doubled the Walsh lead at 6:56 off a feed from classmate Brandon Denton (Whitby, Ontario). The Cavaliers opened up a 3-0 lead at 19:55, as a pass from Cornwall led to a goal by Van Dyke.
The score remained 3-0 until late in the second half when Van Dyke netted his second of the game, once again off a feed from Cornwall.
Walsh, which scored four times on just five shots on goal, finished with a 14-9 edge in total shots. The Wildcats posted a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany) started in net for the Wildcats and made one save over 71:30 of action. Freshman Brett Ekperuoh (Stockholm, Sweden) made four saves for the Cavaliers en route to his first career shutout.
Daemen will remain in Canton and take on Malone University in a non-league game Saturday. Malone is also a member of the G-MAC and is ranked 11th in the G-MAC preseason poll. It will mark the first meeting between the Wildcats and the Pioneers since the 2010 season.
