FLUSHING, N.Y. - A goal by sophomore Elise Williams (Clarence, N.Y.) with just 1:06 left before halftime proved to be the lone goal of the game, as the Daemen College women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Queens College here today. The Wildcats have now won three of their last four games and improved to 8-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the East Coast Conference. Queens dropped to 6-6-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the league.
Daemen, which is ranked ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II East Region poll, has already equaled the total number of wins it had last year. The Wildcats finished 8-8-1 last year and qualified for the ECC Tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2013.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Queens actually outshot the Wildcats 6-2 in the first half, but the game remained scoreless until just before halftime. Daemen earned a corner kick with just over a minute left in the half, and sophomore Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) drove low kick into the Queens box. The ball eluded several players in the box and Williams came up from the back line and one-timed a right-footed shot into the lower right corner.
- The goal marked the first for Williams this season and the second of her career. Stranahan was credited with the assist and is now tied with senior Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.) for the team lead in assists with five.
- The Daemen defense limited Queens to just two total shots and and just one shot on goal in the second half to preserve the win.
- Junior Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) went the distance in net for the Wildcats and made three saves en route to her fourth shutout of the year. Sophomore Shenae Kreps stopped four shots for Queens.
- The host Knights posted an 8-7 edge in total shots, but the Wildcats finished with a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen's last four games have been decided by just one goal and the Wildcats are 3-1-0 in those games.
- After going winless against Queens in the first five meetings between the two schools, Daemen has now prevailed in the last two meetings.
- Senior Jamie Boyar was held without a goal for just the fourth time this season and remains one goal shy of 50 for her career. She is looking to join Kim Walker (2003-06) as the only players in program history to score 50 goals. Walker closed out her career with a program-record 54 goals.
- Daemen returns to action Monday (Oct. 14) with an ECC game at Molloy College.
