2019 NCAA EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS - FULL RESULTS

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Daemen College men's cross country team closed out its 2019 season by placing 24th out of 26 schools at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region Championship meet held today at Belmont Plateau. The 10K race is held to determine the region's three national championship-qualifying teams, as well as three national championship-qualifying individuals.

The East Region of NCAA Division II is comprised of teams affiliated with the East Coast Conference, the Northeast-10 Conference and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Jefferson University of the CACC served as the regional host.

Roberts Wesleyan College claimed its first regional title today, as the Redhawks placed five runners among the top-25 and totaled 55 points. American International College (65) and Stonehill College (82) rounded out the top three schools. Roberts Wesleyan, AIC and Stonehill all advance to take part in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships, set to take place Nov. 23 in Sacramento, Calif.

Freshman Ezra Mutai of American International paced the field of 169 runners with a time of 30:58.4. Mutai finished 43 seconds ahead of senior Lucas Taxter of Stonehill who placed second with a time of 31:41.0

Junior Michah Hewitson of Southern New Hampshire University, senior Chris Davitt of Le Moyne College and sophomore Hugo Arlabosse of Franklin Pierce University also earned a trip to the national championships as the top-three individuals from non-qualifying teams. Hewitson placed fifth (32:01.0), Davitt 10th (32:10.7) and Arlabosse placed 11th (32:17.4).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Four of Daemen's five runners today were freshmen, including Aidan Van Slycke (Irving, N.Y.) who placed first among Daemen runners and 112th overall with a time of 36:49.8. Van Slycke has now placed first among the Daemen runners in each of the last two races.
  • Freshmen Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) and Alexander Reynolds (Olean, N.Y.) finished second and third among Daemen runners. Clementi placed 141st overall with a time of 39:23.1, while Reynolds came in 142nd with a time of 39:34.8.
  • Redshirt junior Cale Silvestri (Elma, N.Y.) and freshman John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) also competed for the Wildcats. Silvestri—the only Daemen runner with NCAA Regional experience—placed 148th with a time of 40:12.9. Bruggman finished 155th with a time of 41:34.5.
  • The Wildcats raced without junior Mike Swiniarski (Akron, N.Y.) for the third-straight race. Swiniarski had been Daemen's top finisher in 10-straight races before sitting out the Canisius Alumni Classic last month. He placed 63rd with a team-best time of 35:17.6 at last year's regional.
