Men's Tennis Visits Coppin State & UDC This Weekend

4/5/2019 12:34:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team returns to the I-95 corridor for the second consecutive weekend, this time taking on Coppin State University (Saturday, April 6, 5:30 p.m.) and the University of the District of Columbia (Sunday, April 7, 12 p.m.).

Daemen (3-11, 0-1 ECC) has won two of its last three matches, including a 4-3 non-conference win last Sunday over University of the Sciences. The Wildcats' only setback of late was a 5-2 loss in their East Coast Conference season opener to perennial powerhouse N.Y. Institute of Technology.

Senior Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) and freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) earned wins in both singles and doubles play during the match vs. U. Sciences. Milner's point in the No. 6 singles position clinched the dual-match victory for the Wildcats. Milner has won two of his last three matches in both singles and doubles play.

Freshman Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.) has made an immediate impact since returning to the lineup in late March. O'Brien missed the nine matches of the spring season while rehabbing an injury. He's posted a 2-1 singles record and a 2-2 doubles record since returning.

Seniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) enter the weekend in striking distance of career milestones. Gonzalez Villegas ranks fourth in team history with 59 combined singles/doubles wins, while Ruiz Martinez sits just behind with 58. Only three players in team history - Mark Veitengruber (82), Gregory Lowe (62) and John LeMar (60) - have reached 60 combined singles/doubles wins. Ruiz Martinez, who has been a second-team All-ECC selection each of the last two seasons, also stands one singles win shy of tying Lowe for second place in team history (32 wins), and one doubles win shy of moving into the top-five on that all-time list.

Saturday's match against Coppin State marks Daemen's second this season against an NCAA Division I opponent. The Wildcats defeated Coppin State 6-1 in the teams' only prior meeting on April 8, 2016. That remains the only win in team history against a Division I opponent.

The Eagles return just two players from their 2017-18 team that posted a 1-11 overall record and an 0-3 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. CSU is coming off a 7-0 loss to George Mason which dropped them to 0-8 this season. They'll host Norfolk State earlier Saturday afternoon before taking on Daemen.

The Wildcats then return to conference play Sunday when meeting UDC in our nation's capital. The Firebirds (0-7-1, 0-2 ECC) also enter the weekend looking for their first win of the season. They host Roberts Wesleyan College in a Saturday matinee before Daemen comes to town.

UDC returns five players from their 2017-18 team that went 8-7 overall and 3-2 in ECC play. The Firebirds have advanced to the ECC Championship tournament in each of the last nine seasons.
