Wildcats Rally Past Dolphins For Third Straight Win

Daemen Opens 3-0 For First Time In Team History, Gets First-Ever Win Over Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team struck for three second-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over Le Moyne College in a non-conference game today at Ted Grant Field. The win was Daemen's first in the all-time series with Le Moyne, and it pushes the Wildcats to 3-0 on the season. This marks the first time since the program's inception in 2000 that the Wildcats have started a season with three successive wins.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a tightly-played but scoreless first half, Elizabeth Maguire put Le Moyne on the board with her first goal of the season off a crossing feed from Elizabeth Glynn at the 49:14 mark.
  • It didn't take Daemen long to get the equalizer however. Senior forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) found the back of the net a little more than two minutes later (51:19). She took a long pass out of the midfield from sophomore Grace Stranahan and eluded goalkeeper Shannon Bennison for her fifth goal of the season.
  • The score remained knotted at 1-1 for more than 20 minutes. Junior defender Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) put the Wildcats on top at the 74:17 mark when she capitalized on a pass from senior Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia). Kenny took a free kick from just outside the box, sending a low pass through traffic to the six-yard mark where Meyer gathered, turned and scored.
  • The Wildcats would add an insurance tally late in the game (85:46) as Stranahan notched her third in as many games. Kenny and fellow senior Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.) earned assists on the play which resulted in a 3-1 lead for the Wildcats with just over four minutes to play.
  • Le Moyne held an 11-8 in total shot attempts, but managed to put just two on frame.
  • Junior goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) went the distance for Daemen, making one save while picking up her second win in as many appearances this season.

HEAD COACH DAN DOLAN POST-GAME COMMENTS

"It took us a while to get used to the size and quick surface, but after 15 minutes or so we produced some quality chances that could have put us ahead. We were on our heels a bit to start the second half, but we took advantage of a counter opportunity and a few set plays. It was great to see us overcome some adversity in the second half and find a way to win."

"The 3-0 start is great, and we'll enjoy it the rest of the day. But, it's a long season and we'll be squarely focused on Goldey-Beacom starting tomorrow. The nice thing is we've built some collective confidence by starting the season this way, and hopefully we'll continue to be a confident group."

GAME NOTES
  • Boyar's goal came on her only shot of the game, and it marked the 42nd tally of her career as she inches closer to Kim Walker's program record. Walker notched 54 goals from 2003-06.
  • Boyar's goal also increased her career point total to 95 as she draws closer to becoming just the third player in program history to reach 100 points
  • Daemen is now 20-5-1 since the start of Boyar's career when she scores at least once
  • Boyar has now scored in three successive games for the second time in her career; her career-best streak is four straight games in September of 2018.
  • Meyer's goal was her first since Oct. 27, 2018 at Chesnut Hill; it also marked the second game-winning goal of her career; she scored the go-ahead goal with less than a minute in regulation to lift Daemen past New York Tech on Sept. 29, 2018.
  • Stranahan is the first Daemen player other than Boyar to score in three straight games since both Meghan Lipinoga and Kacey Bougard did so late in the 2013 season.
  • Ciaramella and Kenny each have three assists this season, ranking second among the East Coast Conference leaders; Ciaramella is the first Daemen player with an assist in three straight games since Samantha Engel in 2013.
  • Maguire's goal for Le Moyne was the first allowed by Daemen this season, snapping a shutout streak that reached 229:14.
  • Daemen entered today's game 0-4 in the all-time series with Le Moyne, which dates back to 2014; the Wildcats had been outscored 12-1 over those four outings; the win helped to ease the memory of Daemen's last trip to Ted Grant Field, a 7-0 loss on Sept. 5, 2016.
  • Le Moyne is a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins dropped to 1-1 on the season with today's loss. They had defeated Daemen's ECC rival Roberts Wesleyan by a 3-1 final last week. The Dolphins are coming off a 5-12-0 campaign in 2018.
