AMHERST, N.Y. - It's too early to call them a team of destiny, but the Daemen College women's soccer team appears to have something special brewing. The Wildcats raced to their fourth straight win, defeating visiting Goldey-Beacom College 3-1 today at Karrer Field. It marks the first 4-0 start to a season in program history.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals and Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) registered a goal and an assist to lead the way.
- Hanes struck first, putting Daemen on the board at the 16:44 mark after taking a feed in the box from senior midfielder Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.).
- Boyar made it a 2-0 Daemen lead with just 21 seconds left in the opening half. Faye Panagopolous (Kenmore, N.Y.) stole the ball in the attacking third and fed it to Boyar in the box. Boyar's initial attempt was turned away by GBC goalkeeper Noel Talbot, but the rebound caromed right back to Boyar whose stick-to-itiveness paid off as she found the back of the net.
- Daemen dominated the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Lightning 15-4 while also holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
- The Lightning were able to cut the deficit in half when Line Kristoffersen scored off a feed from Jackie Ayers at rhe 52:52 mark. The Lightning seemed galvanized by allowing the Boyar goal late in the first half, and came out with a vengeance to start the second. That effort paid off with the Kristoffersen tally.
- That's as close as they would get however, as Daemen added an insurance goal by Boyar at the 74:46 mark. The senior standout took a through-ball from Hanes up the middle of the GBC defense and scored her seventh goal of the season.
- Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) made eight saves, one shy of her season-high, to remain unblemished (3-0) in goal for the Wildcats this season.
HEAD COACH DAN DOLAN POST-GAME COMMENTS
"In the first half I thought we played beautiful soccer. We knocked the ball around really well. I thought we needed to be a little bit more lethal at the top of the box. But besides that, going into halftime up 2-0, getting a late one, I think was well deserved."
GAME NOTES
- Daemen is now on just the eighth four-game winning streak in the 20-year history of the program, and their first since 2017.
- The Wildcats have outscored their first four opponents 17-2. Daemen leads the East Coast Conference in total goals, goals per game (4.25), goals allowed per game (0.50) and goal differential (+15).
- Daemen is unbeaten (6-0-1) in their last seven contests at Karrer Field, a streak that dates back to last September.
- Boyar continues to lead the ECC in goals (7) and points (15) this season. Her performance today marked her third mutli-goal game of the season, and the 12th of her career. Since the start of her career, Daemen is 21-5-1 when she scores a goal, and 12-0-0 when she scores at least twice.
- Boyar has scored the game-winning goal in three of Daemen's four wins this season. She now has 15 game-winning goals in her career.
- Boyar has started all 54 games since the start of the 2016 season, and has totaled 44 goals, 11 assists and 99 points. She stands 10 goals shy of the program record (54) set by Kim Walker from 2003-06, and just one point shy of becoming the third player in program history to reach 100.
- Boyar has now scored in four consecutive games for the second time in her career (also done in September of 2018).
- Hanes' goal was her first of the season and the sixth of her career. She had missed the first two games of this season while recovering from an injury. Her goal today was her first since Oct. 27, 2018 at Chestnut Hill.
- Hanes is the eighth player to score a goal for Daemen this season. She's also the sixth player to record a goal and an assist in the same game (Boyar, Ciaramella, Grace Stranahan, Alyssa Mercado, Sarah Kenny).
- The win today came against a Goldey-Beacom team that has been one of the top teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference of late, averaging 13 wins over the last three seasons.
- It marked the third straight season that the Wildcats and Lightning have met. Daemen has won both meetings at Karrer Field, outscoring GBC 5-2 in those contests. GBC was a 5-2 winner when the teams met last season in Delaware.
